Expanding Heathrow may not be the best solution for the population of the UK in terms of environmental impact or accessibility, but in terms of being internationally competitive what the UK really needs is one big hub airport to challenge the likes of Paris, Frankfurt and Schipol for decades to come. Splitting air traffic with another Airport would increase costs for airlines and passengers as it would require far more infrastructure to support it. This would reduce competitiveness and the UK would lose out. The way I see it we can either back Borris Johnson's plans for the creation of a massive hub airport in the Thames estuary and slowly roll back capacity at Heathrow to prevent traffic from being split too much of we can get fully behind Heathrow and transform it into a four runway airport, which is fast becoming the standard for international hub airports. Obviously the Heathrow option is quicker and easier but both have their merits. In the long run I think the best solution would be to build the Thames Estuary airport and to expand Heathrow and assign one of them as being a hub for Freight and the other as a passenger airport so that traffic is not split too much but also so that capacity is increased significantly to allow the UK to remain competitive. I think this issue also highlights how the UK economy has become increasingly London-centric and that more needs to be done to promote economic growth in the rest of the country. Crucial to this I think, are the plans announced last year for a spaceport in the UK, which would most likely be built in Scotland although Cornwall is also a possibility. In any case it would generate a significant number of highly skilled and highly paid jobs far from the capital and allow for a more equal distribution of wealth throughout the country as well as ensuring the UK aerospace industry can remain competitive well into the future. In relation to this I will be writing a post about the importance of the Space industry to the UK economy in the coming days and posting ahead of the budget outlining some of the measures that I think the UK government should be taking with regard to the space industry. This will form part of a wider series of posts about reforms that I would like to see implemented within the budget or autumn statement. These will be proposals that I think could realistically be passed and implemented relatively quickly rather than what I would consider to be ideal in the long term as much of this would review cross party support in the long term to ensure delivery and for some of my more controversial ideas this would prove difficult to come across.
