Resolutions for a Post-Pandemic World: The UK's Changing Priorities
@ 2023 Rhys Ayr-Cullen
As we start to move forward from the shadow of COVID-19, there is a noticeable change in the air, particularly in the United Kingdom. It’s not just about flipping the calendar over to a new year. It’s about how we, as a community and as a society, reframe our dreams and goals in the wake of the pandemic.
It’s no surprise that staying fit and healthy is still a big deal in the UK. 56% of Brits polled by YouGov this year have said "yes" to exercising more and being more fit and healthy. The pandemic has seemed to have woken us all up to how important our health really is.
There is also a growing buzz around saving money. Almost half of people in the YouGov survey plan to increase their savings in 2024. Can you blame them? With jobs being cut in some major sectors and the economy in decline, people are naturally more concerned about their financial security.
There is also a trend of people wanting to jazz up their homes. About 18% would roll up their sleeves for a home improvement project, jumping from just 10% the year before. We’ve all cooped up at home, right? Understandably, we want our nest to be as comfortable and beautiful as possible.
But it’s not just about lifting weights and saving money. Deep in our hearts there is a strong current about nurturing our thoughts and nurturing our own growth. The pandemic has taken a toll on our mental health, so it’s only natural that many of us would like to find peace, pick up new hobbies, or just learn to relax better.
And let’s not forget the younger generation. They're really starting to set the pace. A good portion of the 18-24 crowd is interested in making decisions, considering things like being kind to the planet, disconnecting from the digital world now and then and also keeping their minds healthy.
In the end, it's like the UK is finding its stride again, mixing the old with the new. Staying healthy and getting fit are still big priorities, but now there's also a strong vibe about being wise with money and making our homes our happy place. These resolutions aren't just about personal goals; they're like a snapshot of how we've all grown and adapted after some really tough times. Here's to a future where we balance the good stuff with the smart!
