[EN] Photographing events means stepping into the private world of complete strangers. This kind of reportage calls for a whole spectrum of skills — from careful observation, to anticipating what’s about to happen, to reacting instantly as conditions change. You need to remain as invisible as possible, while still being exactly where the important moments unfold.
Sometimes, it requires a thick skin — not everyone reacts kindly. There are times you need to back off, and others when you have to stand your ground. But then there are also moments when you get something in return. A small reward. A quiet gift.
I took a few shots of this young lady as she was deeply focused on her phone. Suddenly, she looked up and gave me this utterly delightful, glowing smile. So pure. So genuine. So beautiful.
I treasure images like this. Even with technical imperfections. Even though it was already dark outside and there was barely any light left — that smile lit everything up. And it stayed with me.
It’ll stay for a long time. Maybe even forever. As long as the photo exists, I can always return to that moment.
[PL] Fotografowanie imprez okolicznościowych to wchodzenie w prywatny świat zupełnie obcych ludzi. Tego typu reportaż wymaga całego wachlarza umiejętności: od uważnej obserwacji, przez zdolność przewidywania wydarzeń, po błyskawiczną reakcję na zmieniające się warunki. Trzeba też umieć pozostać możliwie niezauważonym, a jednocześnie być tam, gdzie dzieje się coś ważnego.
Bywa, że potrzebna jest gruba skóra — nie wszyscy reagują przyjaźnie. Czasem trzeba odpuścić, innym razem wykazać się stanowczością. Ale są też momenty, w których dostaje się coś w zamian. Małą nagrodę. Cichy prezent.
Zrobiłem tej młodej damie kilka zdjęć, gdy z zaangażowaniem pisała coś na telefonie. Nagle podniosła głowę i obdarzyła mnie tym przeuroczym, pełnym światła uśmiechem. Cudownym. Szczerym. Po prostu pięknym.
Cenię sobie takie kadry. Mimo technicznych niedoskonałości. Mimo że na zewnątrz panował już mrok i światła było jak na lekarstwo — ten uśmiech rozświetlił wszystko. I został ze mną.
Zostanie na długo. Może nawet na zawsze. Tak długo, jak będzie trwało to zdjęcie będzie można wrócić do tej chwili.
