While it is true that Lezhin artists receive a base wage for producing a comic, that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be entitled to the added revenue that comes from paid readership.
(disclaimer: these are place holder numbers and don’t reflect actual wages) Let’s say a comic artist received $1,000 to produce a comic. The artist then receives $10 for each person who reads the comic.
Out of 1000 people, 500 purchase the comic from the legal source. The other 500 read the comic on a free site. 250 of those people eventually purchase the comic legally. 250 of those people read the comic for free, and never purchase the comic legally. The artist makes $5,000 for the 500 people who read the comic legally in the first place, and $2,500 from the people who eventually purchase the comic.
They still miss out on $2,500 of potential income.
OR
Imagine you are an artist. You’ve spent 40hr/week (a US full time job) creating a comic. It took you a month. You have a stack of 100 at your table at a con each with the price clearly marked on the cover. By the end of the day, you’re out of stock.
50 people pay you, and take a copy. 25 people take a copy without paying, but eventually return and pay you. 25 people take a copy without paying, and never come back.
Are you pissed?
The revenue artists make from paid readership is a form of royalty, (a compensation or portion of the proceeds paid to the owner of a right,as a patent or oil or mineral right, for the use of it. x), and its fair that they should be entitled to those on top of their base wage. It’s the same concept as an author who receives royalties on top of their advance and/or stipend when writing.
I understand that the vast majority of us live on a limited income, or that Lezhin doesn’t offer their comic in a specific country.
A comic is a luxury item, “[a product] which [is] not necessary, but which tend[s] to make life more pleasant for the consumer”. However labeling something a luxury item often comes with the connotation that “luxury goods are typically more costly and are often bought by individuals that have a higher disposable income or greater accumulated wealth than the average.” (x)
I’m not saying that a person who is unable to purchase the comic, doesn’t deserve to read it, but that a person isn’t absolutely entitled to a comic just because they are deserving of them.
Comic creators who have put their goods up for us to enjoy do not deserve to go uncompensated for their work.
A season pass option or a discount when buying chapters in bulk would be nice and is a valid suggestion that Lezhin should consider, however it is not something that we as consumers are entitled to.
An artist has the right to chose the platform for which to share their work, and ask that a consumer pay the price that’s been set.
Lezhin is not perfect. Some of their translations are lacking, multiple fans have posted corrections, some of which impact the context or plot of the story. The delay in translations from the original Korean is frustrating. There is no PayPal option for wider access to the comics. There is no gifting option which could also allow for wider access to the comics.
However, companies grow and change. To continue to implement different avenues of accessibility, whether it be additional payment options, more free access to comics, and grow as a whole, they need customer support.
Fan translations and those who create them are not the root problem, nor are the people who read them and then go to the official site to purchase the chapters as they appear.
However, a translator can not control who views their translations in the same way as Lezhin can not completely prevent others from ripping their comics to free sites. Sharing comics outside of Lezhin allow easier access for those who have no intention of purchasing the comic or supporting the artist at all, and for free sites to steal well intentioned translations.
At the very least, respect the artists who have specifically asked that people do not share their comics anywhere else but Lezhin. They are the reason your favorite comics exist, they are the reason you have followers on your Killing Stalking or Blood Bank or H&H Roman Co., etc. fandom blog, they are the reason that thousands of pieces of fan art and fiction exist for you to enjoy and share with others.
