one word writing prompts – not accepting
when taesoo laughs he does it with his whole body.
hana observes the way his eyes close, watches the curve of his neck when he throws his head back, carefree. taesoo never looks better than when he is carefree. when he stops laughing and looks at her, eyes questioning what is going on hana only smiles. “you’re handsome when you laugh.” her voice sounds more confident these days, she projects it better. the quiet girl who could barely be noticed in school is changed, all thanks to him.
taesoo doesn’t say a word about it, but she sees the way his cheeks turn a soft shade of red and how his eyes shine. he pulls hana towards him and kisses her, his hands holding her face so softly it feels like taesoo is afraid of hurting her. hana knows that is a part of his personality reserved only for her; his light touches, his soft tone. taesoo is rough around the edges, but for her he tries to smooth them.
it’s when they pull back that she sees it, the bruises on his hands. taesoo always shows up like this, bruises and scratches covering his skin, disappearing in the middle of the night while she sleeps, showing up in the early hours with dark circles around his eyes. hana can be innocent, but she is not dumb, she knows there is something he is not telling her, something she is afraid to ask.
“some asshole started shit at the club, this is nothing.” taesoo says when he catches her looking at his hands. he holds her by the shoulders and looks her in the eyes. “nothing you have to worry.” and hana knows he means it, but she still does.
“are you part of the security team now?” hana holds his hands, fingers brushing against his skin. “i don’t like to see you hurt, that’s all.”
for a moment they look at each other and she wonders what he is hiding from her, what is so terrible that taesoo can’t tell her. she wonders about what he does when they are not together, where he goes and who are the people he is fighting.
she knows one day she will have to ask and for now courage fails her. every day hana tells herself she will ask, she will find it in her to do it, but one smile from taesoo, one kiss and she pushes the doubts to the back of her mind, throws it to some dark corner. for once hana wants to be selfish and doesn’t want to ruin what they have.
“i will be more careful, i promise.” taesoo leans forward to kiss her forehead, his thumb caressing her fingers. “i don’t want to worry the prettiest girl i know.”
“you don’t know many girls, do you?” her tone is playful and hana knows he’s deflecting again, helping her forget the doubts.
“i know plenty, but no one is prettier than you.” he smiles and pulls her close as they start walking. “come on, let’s go home. i’ll make you dinner and then we’ll watch that drama you like.”
hana smiles, the feeling of happiness inside her heart so big it could explode. for now her doubts are abandoned one more time and she promises herself to ask him about the truth tomorrow.
or maybe the tomorrow after that.
