Geryon Watcher of the Sky
Great news! The watcher of the skies can now also watch you in bed~
More Ultrakill! I like the mirror reaper. Conceptually at least. It’s got killer lore, a killer design, a killer theme… too bad that the fight is just meh. Anyway, we all know the reaper is a fusion of various husks. But why? I think it’s important to look at the level where it lives. 8-2 is all about the new peace. I mean fraud itself is but especially 8-2.
I believe that the mirror reaper being an amalgamation of multiple people is a direct mockery of the new peace. Hell sees people working together in unity and says ‘Oh you think you’re so wonderful? Here’s where working together is gonna get you’ and creates the reaper as a result.
Speaking of amalgams, I feel like the same logic applies to Geryon. Now I think Geryon deserves its own post, but I’ll do that later if I remember. Also this is going to assume that the Geryon being merciful thing is true because it’s never going to be brought up again and it makes Geryon a much more interesting character. Geryon is created out of multiple consciousnesses that have absolutely zero way of communicating with one another. This further subverts what Hell likely intended it for: a chaotic being that thrashed around killing everything mindlessly.
I think it’s also important to note all the hand imagery with Geryon. In Inferno, Geryon is mockery of the holy trinity. In other depictions of Geryon outside of Inferno where it’s a three headed giant, this depiction is also associated with heretical depictions of God. Looking closely at the Geryon, we can see that it’s made out of hands. In Ultrakill, God is represented by a singular hand, as can be seen in the limbo stained glass windows. This makes me think that Hell created Geryon as a mockery of god as well.
Now, why is Geryon merciful? It likely has capacity for higher thought, considering that it likely understands where it is, why the sinners are suffering, and that they do not revive upon death.
God in Ultrakill abandoned humanity. It only makes sense that Geryon, as twisted mirror of God, would instead embrace them. Geryon is all-loving because God is not.
