Ultrawings coming to Nintendo Switch on March 28th
Ultrawings is neat. As the only built for VR flight game with actual cockpit interaction (as far as I know) I immediately jumped on it.
I’ve played it a bunch and it’s one of my favorite VR games right now. It’s basically Pilotwings VR. Pressing switches in the cockpit to startup is cool, but the game has done a lot to reinforce my thoughts on virtual controls. Without any kind of physical feedback it feels imprecise and vague. I get the feeling there’s better ways to do this with Touch, and I plan on experimenting myself in Unity. For example, I suspect that if they were to change the way haptic feedback works, it would do a lot in helping you figure out where the center is.
While I haven’t played VTOL VR, he has a really interesting solution. Exploiting the fact that the Vive wand is very tall, he grabs the stick in his game, then places the base of the wand on his lap and uses it as a pivot. This way he actually is holding something in real life and because in his game it’s a side-stick, the ingame stick actually pivots around where the base of the Vive wand would be.
It solves the problem of not physically holding something by giving you something to hold. It’s very clever.
I had been wracking my brain for a while now trying to figure out why VTOL VR’s virtual joystick apparently works so well. After seeing this, I realized that the reason I never considered this is because Touch controllers don’t work this way.
Unlike the Vive, the Touch controllers are explicitly designed to represent your hands, not something you might be holding. While this may work to some extent (and I will certainly try) with Touch, this trick won’t work as well because the geometry of the controller just isn’t conducive to that kind of motion.
