AU: Toa Umarak (The Hunter)

One of my older Mocs that I made, where I gave him a more Toa look.

Lore: Umarak was once a kra-matoran not one to rely on others he set out and hunted beasts for himself rather than trembling in the shadows, during the enlightenment (mass changing of many matoran into Toa) him and many other kra matorans were changed into Toa, but little did his allies know evil lingered in his heart. He hid it well until Makuta was submerged into a pool of antidermis. With the first Toa of Shadow slowly becoming evil he was the first to join the makuta though he would not change his name.

So some of the big changes that will help you understand that is version of Umarak better, is Kra-Matorans are naturally created. Ekimu and Makuta were the first Toa( and first Toa of their elements) then the enlightenment happened and many other Matoran were changed into Toa.

Other than that Umarak follows closely to his original personality and still seeks the creatures.

Yes Umarak is in the Phase Sixers AU.

No I do not regret it.

I'll have to wait until Season 3 but I don't care.

Umarak The Hunter

Below the “read more” thing is a really long post about the missed potential behind Umarak the Hunter.

So. The first time I watched Journey to One, I knew it was bad, but this line stuck with me. It’s the first thing we hear Umarak say to the Toa, and it establishes him as a mysterious figure.

As you know, the second half of the 2016 story isn’t great, so none of those mysteries are answered, and it has the most unsatisfying ending of anything I’ve ever seen. Which leads to the point I want to make: That wasn’t the planned ending, the story was canceled early because sets weren’t selling. Most of you probably already believe that, but my evidence for this is the red Umarak mask included in the 2016 Ekimu set.

So, most people already believe that Umarak was supposed to be transformed back to normal instead of being killed, but I have a theory for what was supposed to happen next: Redemption. Umarak as the seventh (or eighth, depending on whether Ekimu counts) Toa. 

Think about it. Umarak says he serves no one, he doesn’t see Makuta as a master. However, when he got turned into the destroyer, he seemed... mindless. IIRC he didn’t even talk. Makuta even says the destroyer is a minion.

So, this extremely independent, aggressive character just got turned into a pawn, and I don’t think he’d take it lying down when he got his free will back. He wouldn’t even have to become a good guy. He would just ally with the Toa because he hates Makuta. 

I like this idea a lot, mostly because I like Umarak. He just seems cool.

USERS OF THE UMARAK ENTITY/CODE

Ever since the Umarak Entity headcanon I've been thinking about a way to make sense of it so hear me out.

The Umarak program was a code that was to be installed into one of the beings created pre-launch, the allegory for hunting and shadows came from the culture of the Rock Tribe, since they had no Glatorian to be part of the Great Beings, they decided to include them in some way.

Umarak was the name of an ancient hunter that became a myth amongst the Rock Tribe, the same myth that sparked the creation of the Bone Hunters.

The first being the Umarak Entity was installed on was Shadow Stealer, which explains his odd set of abilities and his inclusion on the Hand of Artakha. Sometime later, Shadow Stealer passed the entity/code down to Ancient before being assigned on a mission which he never came back from.

Ancient spent the entirety of his time with the entity without using the abilities it granted him. When he was killed by The Shadowed One, the Umarak Entity found it's new host in him.

The eternal struggle of wanting to insert Umarak in G1 but not being able to decide whether he should be a brand new character or be retconned as the true identity/name of The Shadowed One (Ancient and Shadow Stealer are other good options but I already have a true name for Ancient and don’t really care of Shadow Stealer that much). Like both ideas have their merits

Since on one hand I would love to translate Umarak into G1. Umarak is probably my favorite thing about G2. He has a cool character design and killer concept as this elemental entity/hunter, so trying to translate his character to fit into G1s lore would be a really fun creative exercise. It would allow me to have a new player and maybe even expand G1s lore in interesting ways. It also helps that Umarak is not only one of the few unique things about G2, but also that he is actually interesting compared to say, the Skull Warriors (though I do plan to translate Kulta and his boss into G1 as well at the very least).

But on the other hand...while Umarak is pretty unique, I can't help but wonder...Was Umarak meant to be the G2 counterpart of The Shadowed One, or at the very leasr a loose inspiration? Both of them are powerful dreaded hunters who serve as major antagonists, and both got outbested by Makuta, though in different ways. While they arent the same character there is more than a few sinilarities so making Umarak the true name of The Shadowed One makes sense. Not to mention, it's very possible that Umarak WAS the intended true name of The Shadowed One. Given how the names had to be accepted and copyrighted by Lego its very possible Greg sent TSOs real name to approval, and when it was never used the folks who made G2 decided to use it. This is a pretty popular fantheory, and while Im not sure if this is the case, I can see why its popular.

So yeah. Im stuck between making Umarak his own thing and making him TSOs real name. Because both have their merits and cons. So Im just very torn.
