umbral attraction is a fragarian attraction (link) in which one desires to shadow, or be the shadow of, the subject(s) of their attraction. umbral attraction can tie into one or more definitions of “shadow”, and tends to include themes of dependence, following, or inferiority.
shadow (dictionary link) can be defined as quite a few things, most notably: (1) the shade/darkness cast by light shining on an object (ex: the shadow of a tree); (2) something fleeting/insubstantial/inferior when compared to the original (ex: the shadow of a smile, or a shadow of what you used to be); (3) an attendant/intern/follower (ex: being a doctor's shadow for a week) - or similarly, a spy/tail; (4) something haunting, gloomy, or negative (ex: a shadow looming over someone, or under the shadow of war, or a type of ghost/phantom)
