Honestly outside of whatever homoerotic homicidal shenanigans Josh and Akechi could drive each other to, they'd probably react to each other like poorly socialised cats daring the other to blink first while their exasperated handlers boyfriends sit on the sides.

(Or at least Neku would be exasperated. I'm undecided on if Akira would be as well or if he'd be silently egging Akechi on in his, 'has shot a god in the face' way. Maybe if it was just the equivalent of a pair of stand-offish cats just staring at each other flicking their tails irritably and not Josh on the verge of erasing Akechi.)

Man, despite my feelings about how the games handle her, I do really love Shiki as a character, you know?

You have this girl, insecure in herself, trying so hard to be something she's not, something she thinks is more appealing than her self. But there's still enough of the true her underneath that slips out no matter how she tries, she just can't let her Self be erased in favour of being what she thinks everyone else wants.

She's too stubborn to be anything other than her. She has the bad habit of not wanting to admit her negative feelings in case she causes trouble for someone else. She has a bad habit of putting the people important to her on pedestals and making herself feel worse in comparison; holding their opinions of her as more important than how she feels about herself.

She blames herself for other people's problems. She's willing to offer a friendly hand to strangers who've just tried to attack her. She's got an eye for detail but if something is out of place she simply must fix it. Her relationships with others are so, so important to her; she wants to be alive again to preserve them. She thinks no one would miss 'her' if she came back Different.

Eventually she realises she would miss herself.

There is no group of people you can revoke of their human rights without risking your own.

"What about rapists?" Congratulations! If the folks in power don't like that you exist you're now a rapist!

"Well, what about if it's only people who've been convicted of [X]?" Congratulations! The folk in power who don't like that you exist have bribed/influenced the legal system and used their influence to sway public opinion against you and now you're convicted of [X]!

"Fine! What about only for people who have 100% undeniable proof they did it?" Congratulations! The folk in power who don't like that you exist have used their influence to fake evidence and testimonies! The legal system and society are on their side and turning a blind eye to the falsification. They now have "100% undeniable proof" that you did it!

"Well, what if they confess that they did it?" Congratulations! You're no longer a person with human rights because the legal system of the folks that don't want you to exist took things you said out of context and/or coerced/abused a 'confession' out of you!

#umbral chats #You don't have to like them. You can hate them as much as you want. But it's chilling to see people who don't realise their own access-#to human rights hangs on the fragile thread of who they consider the worst people in the world ALSO having that access.

Honestly I feel like the whole thing of dating as a trans man who hasn't medically transitioned could make an interesting narrative to be explored in a creative media sense.

Because a lot of what I hear is two things: "You're a confused butch, I can train you to stop deluding yourself into thinking you're a man" or "Oh you say you're a man but you don't need top or bottom surgery! You can be feminine in a feminine form and be a girl with weird pronouns!"

I feel like that's ripe for a 3 hour indie game that changes the way you think and haunts your dreams at night.

Hmm, it would have to be handled carefully without implying that no trans man or transmasc is ever those things, because they do exist- but also without swinging too hard in the other direction and going 'instead of all trans men being that, all trans men are this instead!'

(Like the never-ending swinging I've seen between 'all trans men want to top' and 'all trans men want to bottom' when one gets too considered as "fact" which makes people over-correct to the other extreme.)

But I ain't a VG dev, so what do I know really hjdfh I'm just a dumbass on the internet who has opinions sometimes.

To me "hell fucking yeah let's go!!" and "Sure, I'm down" are equally 'enthusiastic consent'.

I dunno, when you turn consent into 'must be 100 enthusiastic and excited about it at all times otherwise that's not actual consent' you revoke the ability to consent from people who's expression of consent isn't enthusiastic.

Some people just don't do 'enthusiastic' at all for various reasons. Some people are sex favourable aces who don't personally care themselves but like indulging their partner or enjoy it for non-sexual reasons. Some people are just bored and find sex a Thing To Do. Some people express their enthusiasm in ways that don't look like the typical portrayal of 'enthusiasm'. Some people can't talk verbally, so they have to express their consent in other ways that don't come across as enthusiastically as verbal consent. For some people sex is Just A Job.

The important thing about consent is that it's a willingly given, unambiguous 'yes or no'. Not about how that 'yes or no' is expressed.

The fucking. Neku trusts Josh. He trusts him and still considers him one of his important people!

The mix of 'this is someone who knows how I think inside and out' and 'this is someone who ripped me to shreds and I'm still raw about it'.

And how Neku is Joshua's precious, precious link to humanity. He's not an almighty composer in Neku's eyes (unless it can be used to rib him). Neku's scared of him, what he can do, but he'll reach past the fear to smack him on the shoulder regardless.

Neku is so. So fragile compared to Joshua. Physically, conceptually, compositionally. Joshua could erase him. Joshua could overpower him. Joshua could rewrite him.

But Neku is also Joshua's lynchpin. If Neku was a worse person, he could rule Shibuya as a proxy. There's nothing Josh wouldn't do for Neku, because Neku isn't the kind of person who would ask for it and it makes him gnash his teeth and claw at the walls that he wants to be impressive for Neku and Neku. Won't. Let. Him.
