“startin’ to think lettin’ yara stay up this late for the new year is a mistake.” he sounds serious, but the grimace soon turns into a small quirk of the lips. it’s not like anything was different - she was just excited. afton’s arms cross over his chest, and he leans back in his seat, watching his daughter run around with amaya.

“... new year, huh,” he murmurs, sighing. “hope it’ll be better than this one.”

stop. she doesn't deserve your anger, your guilt. he takes a moment to exhale a sharp breath, hands clenching and unclenching at his side. just, a small way to control his temper. finally, he's able to speak calmly, if only for a moment.

"i'm fine, win. just... i gotta lot of work to sift through, way more with ren still outa commission. you don't gotta worry over me."

sometimes, it feels like a miracle when they can all just... catch their breath. when everything seems to go wrong, even a dull moment of silence like this can mean the world to someone - and he's pretty sure blake is thinking the same thing, as well. even if her hair is tickling under his nose, even if his heart is racing from the anxiety, this - this is better.

a hand moves to rest behind her head, and he takes a deep breath.

well. he certainly wasn't expecting that. he made it pretty clear that he didn't mind the couch, that he was more than willing, considering he'd hardly be able to sleep much, anyway. but she was stubborn. almost as much as he was.

he knows when he's lost, though. head hangs with a sigh, and he follows her orders.

"better not have cold feet."

forces a small smile, despite the self-deprecating humor. they're finally able to look at her, and a hand reaches to hers.

they laugh, looking down at the girl who is most certainly making the most of the position - at least that arm can't get numb. "will i get my arm back at any point throughout the night, or is it lost for good?"
