Well, that's "one" way to find new music...
I am currently a student at the University of Montana taking classes for the entertainment management certificate. One of my classes is a seminar-style class where every scheduled weekend, an expert in a certain entertainment-related field comes in to talk about their work. Twice now, an expert has asked how the students find out about new music.
I usually say that I get notified about new bands (metal almost exclusively) through Facebook fan sites, such as Metal Music Addicts or All Things Metal. However, there is one place I failed to mention in the class. I'm actually in a major minority when it comes to reading about music in a physical format. I buy my copy of Metal Hammer or Decibel almost as soon as my local Hastings gets it in, and most of the time there is a free disc included with it that has songs from a huge variety of bands. Three such bands that I discovered in this way would be Cauldron, Huntress, and Grand Magus.
Cauldron's single "All or Nothing" was on a sampler disc along with the latest DragonForce single a couple years ago. I thought it was catchy and immediately bought the actual album on Amazon.com. I had heard the name of the band before, but never listened to their music because I prefer to listen to new music in my car instead of on my computer. As I delved deeper into their album Burning Fortune, I found that their style is a new take on classic metal such as Judas Priest with a garage band feel.
Huntress' first single "Spell Eater" was also on the same Metal Hammer sampler disc. I was immediately drawn to their vocalist Jill Janus and her scream/growl vocal style. I always love to hear women in metal as long as they don't sing in a typical style (ie. Evanescence or Nightwish) with soaring soprano. I prefer growls and other styles based on the fact that most women don't sing that way. I don't prefer growls necessarily in all vocalists, but I like that women are willing to take the chance. Huntress is also good instrumentally, with lots of riffs to enjoy.
Grand Magus, the Swedish doom metal trio, was my most recent find. Their single, "Triumph and Power" from the album of the same name, is what I would consider a doom power metal. The lyrics remind me of DragonForce, with instrumentation that reminds me of The Sword among others. It's enjoyable and fun music. It makes you feel like you are off to slay the dragon with your best comrades following you to either victory or certain death. I bought the album a couple of days ago only to find out that the album isn't set to release in the states until April.
I would recommend all three bands to my friends, and if you are reading this, I would also recommend them to you.
