Day 4 & 6 combined!

There was a tradition of the second button in most high schools of Japan. The second button of a boy’s uniform is to be given to the person you love as it was the closest button to the heart. But if someone has the courage, they may ask for the second button before it is offered to anyone else.

It was an open secret in the entire school that Tsubaki’s second button belonged to Umemiya… that is, if he could just find the man!

“Tsubaki. Do you ever hate the world for strangling your gentleness?” Umemiya asks in a fit of weakness, and regrets it instantly. Tsubaki knows a soft touch more than any. He has been scrutinized twice as hard, always dubbed too brash or too weak.

Tsubaki laughs like a breeze. He pushes back his fringe. Gentle. “The world tried, Ume. Couldn't get rid of my heart, not with someone like you to lead me through it all. How could I be bitter when your smile reminds me of everything important?”

Oh, how Umemiya preens at that. His hindbrain delights in Tsubaki's steady devotion, but he has a good example to set for all his siblings.

“You're amazing,” he whispers, reveling in the flush Tsubaki's cheeks take on, no rouge necessary. Umemiya did that.

“But,” he continues, always eager to ruin a good thing for himself, “if you had the choice, would you really have wanted to learn to fight?”

Because Umemiya knows Tsubaki's style revolves around his kicks and strong legs, but it's not just that. Umemiya teaches all the girls at the orphanage to protect themselves. Elbows and knees, he drills into them, because those are the hardest bones. The easiest for someone to save themselves with without needing physical strength.

Tsubaki never asked for any fights. When he can't kick, he lashes out. Elbows and knees.

It's just the two of them on the roof. The stars are beginning to show. Likewise, something in Tsubaki begins to show.

“You know the answer to that, Ume. I hate throwing the first punch. But…I can be myself like this. It's not so bad.”

Umemiya chokes on the weight in his throat. Between breaths, he's gathered up all of Tsubaki's beauty in his arms. He rests his forehead against a cool collarbone.

“Woah, Ume? I promise, I'm okay. You helped that happen. I love Furin, and I love Makochi. I love—”

Tsubaki turns to the side, trembling.

“...Love who you helped me become,” he finishes. A lie of omission. Umemiya doesn't have to hear that yet.

I struggled a lot with the pose on this one. I'll upload the timelapse on TikTok and Instagram tomorrow, haha!! I also throw out a bunch of different Procreate brushes here to see how they work best lol.
