The Fish Market by mairithetree

A few years ago, I directed a very short movie when I was studying at Gobelins school (you can find it here). This movie was called Umio. The young boy and the fish called Boru come from a story in which humanity evolved because of the water rising. A lot of them have turned into fishes or are about to with the exception of the teenager girl Reimi. This story never left my mind and I’m extremely happy to share this picture with you! I have always wanted to make it but it scared me to make it because I struggle with complex backgrounds. I’m very happy with the result and I can’t wait to create more illustrations from that same world <3. 

In this market, fishes can find all the algae and plankton they wish to eat. The design and aesthetic of this piece is inspired by the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo.

Now, let me show you some researches for the other character of my short-movie : Boru ! The faithful, optimistic and cheerful companion of Umio.           Boru used to be human before but since the environment changed a lot, his body adapted and mutated to another form, half-fish and half-human. I’ve taken the koi carp as an inspiration for this character, the bright colors of red, orange and white were amazing contrast to the blues of the sea and sky. At first, I wanted to show in the storytelling some glimpses of the old body Boru used to have but after hearing good advices from teachers and friends, I threw away this idea.
