“ S-O-P-H-I-E. ” The girl signed. “That’s my name.” Most people asked her why she had to use sign language to communicate when she was perfectly capable of hearing. The truth was, her vocal chords just didn’t want to work. From the time she was an infant, the only sounds she was able to make were small sighs, small coos, that was it. As she grew older, her chords grew stronger but the most she could do was hum a song or two. Speak, though? She was far too afraid to. So she settled for sign language, writing on a whiteboard that she always carried around, or texting the person she was communicating with. It was a struggle but one she could deal with. Hell, she had to deal with it. “What’s your name?”
