طرب(tarab) is the Arabic word for being enveloped and cast into ecstasy by a piece of music. By definition only Arabic music is capable of casting this spell on the mind, but it’s a rich concept, resonating with anyone who has become drunk on music, or lost themselves in a performance; this meagre tumblist of tracks is driven by the search for a somewhat consonant sensation.

Umm Kulthoum is the legendary master of building the tension to generate طرب in her audiences. Her live performances were elaborate constructions, fine webs cast between audience and singer over twenty, forty, ninety minutes per song. This is one of her most famous: انت عمري<(em>inta omri), you are my life.
