What if Unalaq was somehow contacted by Vaatu and they bonded like Wan and Raava did, making Unalaq some sort of 'dark avatar'. It would explain why he has power over the dark spirits attacking when no one else does and why he would be trying to open the spirit portals.

It would also explain why he's somehow so knowledgeable on the portals themselves when, before LoK, they weren't really prevalent in the story.
