I think Persona 1 sorta did what Persona 4 did in regards to bad endings because if you didn't try to understand Maki and comfort her the right way at a certain point, you'd be locked into the bad SEBEC ending. Granted, it was a very simplistic mechanic but at least it was at the midpoint of the story and not just a choice at the end.
You’re right!! I totally forgot about the possibility of losing Maki there, but it IS pretty similar to what P4 did with Namatame and Nanako, but happened even a tad earlier. So yeah, I guess P1 and P4 are really the only ones that at least partially follow up on the promise of the player having to take responsibility for their choices.
