The dark side of being an UAV pilot for the military. Post traumatic stress disorder is apparently becoming a common problem amongst both young and experienced pilots flying unmanned aerial vehicles over combat zones like Afghanistan. The true problem occurs to be the physical distance between the area of operation and the actual cockpit of the pilot. Regular pilots that are deployed in the area seemingly suffer less from their experiences directly connected to their sorties.
A problem both today's and future military and political leaders have to take into a account when developing new tactics as well as ways and means of armed engagement.
Specially the German Bundeswehr - being fairly new in the game of unmanned tactics - has not yet gained a lot of experience. It should use the remaining time wisely to prepare itself for the worst case and ask for support from inside as well as from outside advisers.
