Broadway Temple, the 735-foot tall skyscraper church that would have stood on the on Broadway between 173rd and 174th Streets in Washington Heights. The $4 million #skyscraper would have been the tallest church in the world, featuring a 2,000 seat nave, a swimming pool, bowling alley, playgrounds, dormitory, and more. in 1925, with only half of the funds needed – including a donation for the rotating cross at the top of the structure – construction began and two years later the twelve-story apartment towers that anchored each corner of the church were completed. When the rest of the cash could not be raised construction was halted, with only a bowling alley, gym and meeting space constructed when the stock market crashed in 1929. A much smaller church would finally be completed in 1952, and at three stories tall, slightly resembles the original forty-story tower. #unbuiltnewyork #unbuiltnyc (at Broadway Temple Washington Heights United Methodist Church)
