With this last issue of Uncanny X-Men right here, we wrap up both the Genosha storyline from the last 3 issues, as well as the Uncanny X-Men portion of the Inferno Prologue I’m reading (there’s only a few more issues of New Mutants left to read before I’ll be completely done with the omnibus and moving on to Inferno). This was a good little story, and a good origin to Genosha Island, explaining how and why it is so violently tied the state of mutant-kind. It’s interesting to see how the country started out as an anti-mutant, Nazi-like state, even though it will soon become a home for mutant refugees fleeing from the rest of the world. Welp, Madelyne Pryor has officially gone from run-of-the-mill neglected housewife to bonafide mysterious X-Men badass, complete with all the intrigue, charisma, and relatability that the best X-Men characters possess. This is helped in no small part by this sleek and slender artwork of Marc Silvestri. Maddie is so realistically rendered here as a little girl you can practically hear her humming to herself as she picks daisies out in the field. That is, before she sets off a Phoenix nuke in the middle of imaginary Genosha. The Phoenix metaphors are coming hot and heavy now as we approach Inferno, even though they’ve existed ever since Madelyne was first introduced, and its obvious Claremont has finally settled on a concrete story arc for her character. All that’s left is for things to play out. (Uncanny X-Men #238 – Nov 1988)

God damn it this is provocative and violent!!! Guns getting shoved in peoples’ faces. Nude ladies pressing themselves up against their lovers. I was 10 years old when this came out!! Honestly, this material seems awfully adult and I can’t believe Marvel got away with putting it on the magazine racks next to Archie Comics. Also, I guess Havok and Madelyne are together now? They must have started fucking in Australia already? I’m telling ya, sometimes the less ya show it, the more edgy it feels. Which is why I always wear long-necked turtle necks. We wrap up this Genosha storyline with the X-Men forcing Wipeout to restore Rogue’s and Wolverine’s powers, and then the team departs while leaving a dire warning for those in power to start making some changes that don’t involve enslaving other races, rather than taking direct action to remove them from power.

Like this would even work! Can you imagine if a bullet proof superhero of the poverty stricken and oppressed stormed into the American congress and forced our senators to acknowledge the evil they do and the pain they cause?? And then they just left and said “if you don’t stop all of this shit, I’ll be back!!” Do you think our dumb fuck politicians would change their ways??? No! They’d use it as an excuse to fund the NRA to build laser blasters or some shit. (Uncanny X-Men #238 – Nov 1988)

This is the first time Wolverine refers to himself as “Patch” which will soon become one of his more prominent alter-egos. By this time this comic was published in November of 1988, Wolverine’s solo series was already underway, and in those stories he fully assumes the Patch identity during his time in Singapore. But throughout these issues of Uncanny X-Men he's consistently been with the team, so it hasn’t yet seemed like a good time to divert and read those comics yet. And seriously, he’s not even wearing an eyepatch here. What sense does it make to call himself Patch??? I’d totally be like, “Patch, huh. Where’s your god damned eyepatch?” Totally obvious fake name. The X-Men FINALLY show up to help rescue Wolverine, Rogue, and Madelyne from their Genosha captors (they sure took their sweet tap-dancing time), and Wolverine’s claws come out. It’s always nice to see the good guys do some murdering after they’ve been getting abused for 3 straight issues!! (Uncanny X-Men #238 – Nov 1988)
