Man, Rogue’s brain is such a fantastically fucked work of art. Here’s she’s been drained of her mutant power and she retreats into her mind where every personality she’s ever absorbed is waiting to hang out with her. And even though she’s sitting broken in a Genosha prison cell, she can just let the psyche of Ms. Marvel take over  with all her James Bond super spy skills and bust herself out. Pretty bad ass. I’ve never read this comic, but I’ve always loved this cover, if only because of the accurate representation of the proportional difference between Rogue and Wolverine. He really looks like the runt he’s supposed to be here, a characteristic that’s been lost in Hugh Jackman’s film portrayal. (Uncanny X-Men #236 – Oct 1988)

Magik attempts (and fails) to reconstruct her scrying glass in order to locate Lila Cheney, after it was destroyed during her battle with Forge. At this point, if I didn’t know Inferno was right around the corner, I’d be like, god damn it, is any of this Limbo shit ever going to get resolved? Trouble with the inter-dimensional hell realm has been brewing for years, and it’s been such a slow burn watching Illyana lose control of the place. Also, can anyone read what the fuck the title of this comic book is supposed to be? “IGGUSONI”? “iGGUSiON!”? “¡GUSSiON!”? I seriously can’t tell what that’s supposed to say.

UPDATE: Ok, as I’m editing this post before I move it from my drafts too my queue, I realize the title of this story is actually “Illusion”. I’m not going to make any excuses for myself, since I’m considerably less drunk now than when I first wrote this post, but seriously that’s a difficult font to read. (New Mutants #68 – Oct 1988)

Way to go, you little shit-heel New Mutants. All of your debauchery and horsing around turned Magneto into a super villain again. This is pretty much any parent dealing with children under the age of 10. There comes a point where your kids are eating couch cushions and slinging vomit at each other, and taking turns stabbing each other in the eye with a pencil, and eventually you just can’t take it anymore. You lose your god damn brains, go to your closet, pull out your psychic-wave blocking super villain helmet that you built in college, and you say to yourself, I will raise these god damn kids even if I have to kill them. This is totally relatable!! (New Mutants #69 – Nov 1988)

Well, Inferno has basically started, as Magneto finds out after he flies to New York and gets attacked by a possessed fire escape. I like how he doesn’t really think twice about it. He just transforms into that killer white suit and heads on into the Hellfire Club. As if this shit happens to him every day. God damn it my life is so boring. (New Mutants #70 – Dec 1988)

Jesus Psylocke is vicious!!! How many time has this mild mannered British lass shown a propensity to murder and maim without hesitation? Also, this artwork is looking fantastically purple. (Uncanny X-Men #236 – Oct 1988)

With this last issue of Uncanny X-Men right here, we wrap up both the Genosha storyline from the last 3 issues, as well as the Uncanny X-Men portion of the Inferno Prologue I’m reading (there’s only a few more issues of New Mutants left to read before I’ll be completely done with the omnibus and moving on to Inferno). This was a good little story, and a good origin to Genosha Island, explaining how and why it is so violently tied the state of mutant-kind. It’s interesting to see how the country started out as an anti-mutant, Nazi-like state, even though it will soon become a home for mutant refugees fleeing from the rest of the world. (Uncanny X-Men #238 – Nov 1988)

This is the final issue of the Prelude to Inferno omnibus, excluding some bonus material at the end of the book, and it’s the final issue before we start Inferno proper. I haven’t been doing any reviews for these books as I’ve been going, but I plan on doing a big review for everything after I finish Inferno that covers everything I’ve read since the first issue of X-Factor. This, in my mind, encapsulates Jean Grey’s resurrection and all of the consequences that were caused by that event. (New Mutants #70 – Dec 1988) Happy holidays 1988!!!
