In case it’s your birthday
Dear Gus,
On this day eight years ago, I was in my regular Monday night spot, up against the stage at d.b.a., listening to Glen David Andrews play the trombone. That night, “Uncle” Lionel Batiste went on stage to play his cane.
To bring you up to speed, Uncle Lionel died the following year. And Glen David Andrews has essentially become a regular domestic abuser. It’s terrible when a talented artist does bad things. It’s hard sometimes to separate the art from the artist. I will always love his showmanship, and I will always treasure those nights at d.b.a., but talent in one area of life does not excuse inappropriate violence in another area of life. It’s just as important (and easy) to live peacefully when you are famous as it is when you are not. Never forget that, even after your dad cashes that Powerball jackpot. We will be rich, but we will be humble.
