Sarah Rogers and Winifred Barnes have been friends for a long time, and they love and rely on each other like sisters when their husbands leave to fight in the war. Sarah dotes on Winnie's son Bucky, and tries to cope with the fading hope that one day she'll have children too.
The child she ends up with does not arrive in any way she could have foreseen, but that doesn't stop her from loving her son with every corner of her heart. When they meet again by chance, Bucky and Steve end up with a bond as close as brothers, with no idea about the actual truth. At least, not until tragic circumstances lead Winifred to explain to both of her boys why they'll always have each other.
