its funny that the first thing i drew for this blog was an au, considering i don’t typically like most ut aus hahaha

i like the idea of personality swaps, but i like them better when the characters still retain their interests and overarching attitude, and just swap how they approach them. so i guess this is my take on an under-swap, haha.

nothin’s set in stone (aka ive literally only given this a passing thought lmao) but when i was drawin my general idea was:

sans had the energy and stick-to-it-ness to not give up on the lucrative science career he totally could have had if he weren’t a lazy piece of shit, and papyrus wound up being too tired and down on himself to get anything done at all. sans still pushes him to try out for the royal guard (like papyrus does to sans in the canon timeline), but undyne won’t let him in on the basis that he’s basically too depressed to properly defend himself. “he’d probably just apologize for inconveniencing whatever human he found and ask them nicely not to make him do his job”, or something like that.

sans is still a sentry so he can “work close to home”, which happens to be where his lab is. he still winds up slacking off from his sentry job, but in this universe it’s so he can go do more fun, important stuff, like conducting extremely dangerous, should-be-illegal experiments in his basement.

gonna experiment with how i interpret his outfit next, but tbh he’s so meta i bet he cycles through different fan interpretations anyway. he’s got like 10 vaguely similar copies of the same general outfit.

Since Sans is happier in this au you’d think he’d be less,, tired looking. Does he stay up doing Science Stuff or something, or is that an AU Secret? (Or just his face lmao..)

Science Stuff is correct, mostly.

concepts for toriel and asgore for that personality switch au i was dabblin in. i decided to keep to the theme of switching just two main, core traits between each character, so we get a spiteful grief-blind toriel, and a wise do-nothing asgore.

toriel is the one who decides to wage a war on humans, while asgore gives up on getting to the surface entirely - but toriel is still self-isolated in the ruins, and asgore is sitting on the throne. having a king that loafs around and doesn’t try to fix anything has a ... negative effect on the underground. toriel takes advantage of people being desperate for someone to do something.

these two are pretty much the root cause for most of the other characters developing how they did.

uldertane’s frisk, chara, asriel (and, by consequence, flowey)

chara --> frisk: + power mad, + cunning

frisk doesn’t have much personality in-game, and a lot of it can be influenced by chara already in a no-mercy run, so deciding what they’d be was hard. in the end, i decided uldertane frisk is just defaulted to “no mercy”, and has to be convinced by chara and the npcs to go through a good or neutral route. they’re very conniving - even more so than frisk in canon - and have an insatiable desire to destroy everything around them. an ulder!frisk that’s been convinced to go the True Pacifist Route would probably act like a bored cat in a room full of knick-knack covered tables. they’ll be your friend, but you might not want to put anything breakable near them. or valuable, for that matter - they’ll probably steal it.

asriel --> chara: + compassion, + resolve

chara is a devoted and delightful friend who would do just about anything for the people they care (care-a lmao) about. they try to put faith in the people they love, which is why they might let frisk go on a rampage through the underground, but they will ultimately try to intervene and get frisk to abandon their no-mercy route. chara encourages frisk to notice people who are trying to be their friend, and gives them gentle nudges towards companionship to take care of the void frisk’s trying to fill with violence.

this alludes to the really common scenario of people who try to play a “bad guy” in rpgs ultimately abandoning the idea because they don’t want their companions to disapprove of their actions. chara’s the spiritual embodiment of those “___ disliked that” approval messages that pop up in the corner of the screen when you're a jerk.

frisk --> asriel: + neutrality + goofiness

as flowey, asriel is pretty chill. he’s played through so many routes - most neutral, some pacificst, some no mercy - that he’s gotten tired of it all, and doesn’t even see the appeal in bothering anymore. he just watches as frisk trots around the place, offering occasional blunt comments/advice. in spite of his typically indifferent attitude, he does still enjoy silly antics, as they alleviate his boredom - even if he can’t feel much in regards to actual “joy”.

instead of toriel saving frisk from flowey, flowey saves frisk from toriel by popping up to warn them that the pie toriel is baking for them is poisoned. he follows and helps frisk out of a soft spot for chara, who he knows isn’t frisk, but can’t help wanting to think is still alive. flowey seems mildly disappointed anytime frisk does un-chara-like things, like slaughtering everyone they meet.

asriel and chara still had a plan to get to the surface, but it was to try and convince the humans to give asriel enough human souls to break the barrier. chara still brought their body to the surface, so the humans still thought asriel had murdered them, and things play out about the same from there.
