Memoirs of a Sociopath: Episode 12

Hello, ladies and gentlemen. It has been quite some time since I have written one of these entries, and tonight I was thinking, "You know, there are quite a few uncultured individuals out there that don't understand the fundamentals of fine wine and wine making. Perhaps I should educate the masses on the most enthralling drink on the market." And so here I am, writing this guide.

Do you know all of the types and varieties of wine? There are thousands in total and it is essential to living that you understand a good number of them or else you simply have not truly lived.

We will begin tonight with the five basic types of wine, or the five main styles of the world's fairest spirit. You see, all wines can be organized into five token 'groups', if you will. Within each group there are hundreds of different grape varieties and also different winemaking styles. The five main groups are as follows:

Red Wine: Red wine is still wine made with black grapes. These can range from light to dark, and bone-dry to sweet. Red wine is a personal favorite of mine, my particular favorite flavor being a slightly aged black cherry, raspberry Sangiovese.

White Wine: Another still wine, produced from green and sometimes black grapes. Flavors span from rich and creamy to light and zesty. I am not a fan of white wines, but I will drink them if there is nothing else available, though I do enjoy a glass of rich, creamy chardonnay.

Rosé Wine: The third variety of still wines from black grapes, produced by removing the skins before they deeply color the wine. Also formed by blending red and white wine together. Both dry and sweet styles of rosé are common. My personal favorite Rosé variety is an herbal Cabernet sauvignon.

Sparkling Wine: A style of winemaking involving a secondary fermetation, which causes bubbles and fizz. Sparkling wine can be red, white or rosé and can range from mineral, to rich and sweet. Red wines in particular are extremely delicious when fermented this way, as they cause a slight tingle as they go down, providing the same great taste with a delightful twist.

Fortified Wine: A style of vinification involving fortifying wine with spirits. Typically a dessert wine, but many dry-style fortified wines exist such as dry Sherry. I am not as much of a fan of the fortified spirits, but there are some good dessert wines currently on the market, including sweet hazelnut cream Sherry.

Level of Sweetness

Within the five main styles of wine are different levels of sweetness. This is a vinification style as most wines can be produced from dry to sweet.

For example, a dry wine is produced when all of the grape sugars are fermented into alcohol. Some dry wines may have a touch of residential sugar to add body, but not sweetness.

A semi-sweet wine, is also known as an Off-Dry wine. The winemaker leaves a touch of the sugars in a wine usually to complement acidity and/or aromatics in wine. Riesling, for example, is typically Off-Dry.

Finally, a sweet wine leaves a lot of the sugars in a wine non-fermented. Sweet wines are typically lower alcohol, as long as they are not fortified.

As I mentioned before, there are thousands of different varietals, regions and types of wine. Because of the diversity it’s easier to start classifying wine by the way it tastes. Wine sommeliers, and those who drink wine often such as myself are able to identify wines through primary fruit flavors.

Perhaps one day you too, yourself, can be as experienced in tasting the finest drink that this entire world has to offer. After all, what is the point of this miserable existence if you don't make the most of it? That is all for tonight. Have a good night, and a miserable tomorrow.
