In Appendix II of the Brabourne edition of Jane Austen's Letters, under the heading "Inventory of Linen and clothes made up for Fanny, when she married and went to Combe, Dec. 14th, 1791", there is an entry for 24 Day Shifts, followed immediately by one for 14 Night Shifts. What exactly did a Night Shift look like, and how did it differ from a Day Shift? Thanks!

Good question! I’m not aware of any actual research on the topic - my feeling is that a nightshift would be or could be of a slightly heavier linen, since it did not need to fit well underneath a set of stays or tight sleeves. But we don’t know if there was any construction difference, like cuffed sleeves vs. straight sleeves.
