Both were once a jester for the Dreemur family before things got complicated. Eventually only he and Asgore were left at the castle.

IN UNDERTALE, Asgore lets him go, encouraging Jolly to go and live his own life. He had trouble adjusting bc the one thing he knew how to do, he couldn't do anymore. He tried to entertain the folks all over town and while some did enjoy his antics, they didn't stay. They eventually had to move on. Desperately he kept trying and trying, hoping to regain purpose. Just around the time he was going to give up, he met Papyrus.

The skeleton was always entertained by Jolly's tricks and always encouraged him. So he kept seeing him, bringing new surprises and Papyrus continues to cheer him on.

The both of them still remain friends despite having mutual feelings for each other because both are worried if they say something, it might ruin the friendship. That the other couldn't POSSIBLY want romance.

IN UNDERFELL, UF!Asgore forces Jade to stay bc he doesn't want to be left alone in the castle. Though he justifies it by calling it only entertainment, he isolates himself so much in the castle that he needs Jade there so he doesn't lose his mind (already pretty close to it tbh). While Jade wants to escape, to not be trapped in the castle, part of him doesn't want to leave Asgore behind. He's worked with the family for a while and he's one of the only people who have seen him vulnerable and is still around. The relationship is incredibly complicated, they fight quite a bit. Asgore has a terrible temper and Jade's attempted escapes before, however he's either not left bc he's been caught or because he sees how heartbroken Asgore becomes.

His escape attempts lessened, not only due to the king catching on, but also do to Jade no longer seeing the point, accepting his life.

However, things change he meets Underfell Papyrus. The skeleton joins one of Undyne's visits to the castle. While Undyne is taking to talk about classified things with the king, Jade takes his chance to introduce himself to the skeleton and the two hit it off pretty well.

Though they don't get to speak much, Jade slowly opens up to Papyrus and the skeleton begins to try and help him escape.

SO the main dynamic idea is like the knight saving the princess in the tower from the dragon (but the princess is also emotionally/romantically attached to the dragon) but I see it ending to where they both are able to get through to UF!Asgore and he gets both papyrus and my sona taking care of him. Probably even moves out of the castle entirely
