Matthew Chapter 4
Matthew Chapter 4 recounts Jesus's temptation by Satan in the wilderness, where he overcomes three distinct temptations by quoting scripture and then begins his public ministry by calling his first disciples and preaching the "good news" of God's Kingdom. Jesus's Temptation
The Wilderness: After being baptized, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil.
Fasting: He fasted for 40 days and nights, experiencing hunger as Satan approached
The Three Temptation
Bread - Satan tempted Jesus to turn stones into bread, questioning his identity as the Son of God. Jesus responded by quoting Deuteronomy 8:3 "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God."
The Temple - Satan took Jesus to the highest point of the Temple in Jerusalem and urged him to throw himself down, believing angels would save him. Jesus quoted scripture again, saying, "You shall not put the Lord your God to the test."
Kingdoms - In the third temptation, Satan offered Jesus all the kingdoms of the world and their glory if he would fall down and worship him. Jesus rebuked Satan, stating, "Away with you, Satan! For it is written: "Worship the Lord your God and serve him Only."
Satan Departs: After Jesus refused to sin, the devil left him, and angels came to minister to him.
Beginning of Public Ministry
Galilee and the Sea: Jesus went to Galilee, where he began to preach the "good news" of the coming Kingdom of God.
Calling Disciples: He called the first four disciples - Andrew, Peter, James, and John, who were fishermen, to leave their nets and follow him to become "fishers of men."
Preaching and Healing: Jesus taught in the synagogues, proclaimed the Kingdom, and performed miracles of healing, attracting large crowds of people seeking help. His actions demonstrated his compassion and his ability to turn the truth into deeds.

Matthew Chapter 3
Matthew chapter 3 explains the ministry of John the Baptist, who preached a baptism of repentance in the wilderness for the coming Kingdom of Heaven and the baptism of Jesus by John. John's ministry was a preparation for the Messiah, a message that angered the Pharisees and Sadduces when they came to be baptized, causing him to call them a "brood of vipers" and warn them that their lineage was not enough to save them. The chapter culminates with Jesus's baptism, where the heavens open, the Holy Spirit descends, and God the Father declares, "This is my beloved Son."
John the Baptist's Ministry
Role: John is presented as a prophet preparing the way for the Messiah, as prophesied by Isaiah. He preached in the wilderness, wearing camel hair and eating locusts and wild honey.
Message: His central message was to "Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near." This was a call to change one's mind and direction, not just to feel sorry for sins.
Baptism: John performed a baptism with water for repentance, which was a symbol of cleansing and a turning away from sin. He warned that one who would come after him would baptize with Holy Spirit and fire.
Confrontation with the Pharisees and Sadducees: When religious leaders came to be baptized, John rebuked them, calling them a "brood of vipers." He told them that their ancestry from Abraham was not enough and that they must produce "fruit in keeping with repentance" to show genuine change. He warned that every tree that does not bear fruit would be cut down and thrown into fire.
Jesus's Baptism
Submission to Baptism: Jesus traveled from Galilee to the Jordan River to be baptized by John. John initially objected, feeling unworthy, but Jesus explained that it was necessary to "fulfill all righteousness" and submit to God's plan.
The Holy Spirit and a Voice from Heaven: After Jesus was baptized and came out of the water, the heavens opened, the Holy Spirit descended like a dove, and a voice from Heaven declared, "This is my beloved Son, whom I am well pleased."
Significance: This event served as a public confirmation of Jesus's identity as the Son of God and the fulfillment of prophecy while also showing His approval of John's mission. It marked the beginning of His public ministry and was a divine affirmation of His identity.
