Matthew Chapter 4 recounts Jesus's temptation by Satan in the wilderness, where he overcomes three distinct temptations by quoting scripture and then begins his public ministry by calling his first disciples and preaching the "good news" of God's Kingdom. The chapter highlights Jesus's divine reliance on God's word and sets the stage for his mission to teach, preach, and heal, beginning his public work in Galilee.
The Wilderness: After being baptized, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil.
Fasting: He fasted for 40 days and nights, experiencing hunger as Satan approached
Bread - Satan tempted Jesus to turn stones into bread, questioning his identity as the Son of God. Jesus responded by quoting Deuteronomy 8:3 "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God."
The Temple - Satan took Jesus to the highest point of the Temple in Jerusalem and urged him to throw himself down, believing angels would save him. Jesus quoted scripture again, saying, "You shall not put the Lord your God to the test."
Kingdoms - In the third temptation, Satan offered Jesus all the kingdoms of the world and their glory if he would fall down and worship him. Jesus rebuked Satan, stating, "Away with you, Satan! For it is written: "Worship the Lord your God and serve him Only."
Satan Departs: After Jesus refused to sin, the devil left him, and angels came to minister to him.
Beginning of Public Ministry
Galilee and the Sea: Jesus went to Galilee, where he began to preach the "good news" of the coming Kingdom of God.
Calling Disciples: He called the first four disciples - Andrew, Peter, James, and John, who were fishermen, to leave their nets and follow him to become "fishers of men."
Preaching and Healing: Jesus taught in the synagogues, proclaimed the Kingdom, and performed miracles of healing, attracting large crowds of people seeking help. His actions demonstrated his compassion and his ability to turn the truth into deeds.
God bless you all, and remember, Jesus loves you and is worth all the world✝️
