The way I struggled to actually get this piece to 100 words was ridiculous XD, but I'm pretty satisfied with how it turned out! Again, it may be a bit out there in terms of the prompt, but I hope that's not too much of an issue @thedrabblecollective

It's easy to forget in a mask.

That lethargy and nihilism are following quietly behind every leap, that it's still on with every passing conversation, that there's existence beyond it, even.

But through headline images and discourse wandering the streets, the mask had latched onto whispered hopes and become an entity of its own. Separate enough that individual interpretations didn't go farther than the help it provided, but close enough that in the darkness of early mornings, Papyrus carried the weight of their judgement alone.

Drabble May 1: Carriage

Thank you @thedrabblecollective for hosting this event! There were so many ways for me to take this specific prompt, but I'm ultimately pretty satisfied with how it came out! I'm kinda worried that my takes on the prompts are a bit more on the abstract side, but I tried so hard to make it make sense in universe T~T, so I hope this is okay!

When the spider monster, recently freed from captivity after stars knows how long, bit him, Papyrus didn't think much of it, figuring that that was its way of griping over his ceaseless tab and evolving puns. But when it keeled over, stiff-legged, immobile, and seemingly dead—without the usual dust—that was when he panicked.

Rushing back to Undyne's lab, the labyrinthine halls of Alchemax blurring together, he tossed it onto her desk and blipped away before she could even—

Drabble May 2025 24: Date

I think I was the most excited to write this one! XD I had to mow down a lot of words to reach the limit, and I'm kinda worried that it almost doesn't make sense... But I do plan to expand this idea later, anyway!

When the blonde woman he’d saved ages ago invited him to a coffee shop, Papyrus, in a clean shirt, thought back to his dating manual.

“This is my boyfriend, Peter!”

He had not expected to be a third wheel.

“Been there.”

A red-braided woman greeted him by the counter. “I know a way out. You in?”

Despite hesitating, her easy smile and coercion had them out the door before he even got her name. And then they were talking and laughing and Papyrus was glad he had worn a clean shirt.

Drabble May 2025 19: Pebble

Never heard of this phrase before, but it certainly saved my skin XD

not the only pebble on the beach      (especially of a former lover) not unique or irreplaceable.

Being a superhero didn’t exempt you from embarrassment. Not when you first start out, not when you lose some fights, not even when some no-name villain proclaims they’ve never heard of you. But when your absence is hardly noticed, and is in fact seamlessly replaced with another, you start to wonder whether you were ever important to begin with.

Papyrus, though grateful that the villain of the week had been dealt with, didn’t know how to deal with the feeling in his Soul.

Drabble May 2025 14: Saccharine

At first I wasn't sure what to write for this, then when I got it, I was so excited to explore more of their dynamic and the characters in general!! :D

Saccharine      1. Excessively sweet or sentimental

Mary-Jane never considered herself mean. Sure, some of her comments were poorly timed, and maybe she could phrase her advice a bit better, or learn to keep in some of the harsh truths she thought of to herself—not to mention the occasional ‘rude’ gesture, or how loud her frequent arguments could get—but she didn’t think she was malicious.

But she supposed, when her roommate, and self proclaimed best friend was as sickeningly sweet, as intoxicatingly bubbly, and as frustratingly kind as Gwen Stacy—was Gwen Stacy—she could see how people might come to that conclusion.

Drabble May 2025 10: Serenade

I think here, the prompt turned out to be more of a suggestion than anything, and only if you squint T~T

Serenade A piece of music sung or played in the open air, typically by a man at night under the window of his beloved

When the hauntingly peaceful music which had been putting Papyrus to sleep more often, was proclaimed to be a villain keeping others awake, he reluctantly got out of bed to see what was going on.

With sleepy eyes and incessant yawns, he followed after the trail of sleep walking women to a warehouse just outside town.

There, he quickly had to figure out how to stay awake before it was lights out for everyone, for good.

Drabble May 2025 9: Enjoy

I swear, the prompts just kept getting harder and harder (to relate to the universe, anyway), but I do like how I wrote this one!

The first time Papyrus had stepped out in suit—a joke more than anything to get the people off the monsters’ backs, and have a little chuckle with himself later—he had been wholly prepared for it to run its course quickly.

But as time went on, and the joke along with it, accompanied by an exhilaration and a zest for the call—for life—that he never would have seen coming, he wasn’t sure where the jest started, and his enjoyment of it ended.

He wasn’t sure that it even mattered anymore.

Drabble May 2025 8: Stars

Originally I thought of talking about how cool it was seeing the stars from rooftops, or flying across them, but I think I like how this one turned out better! =D

For the longest time, Papyrus had been content with being a supporting character in his own life—comic relief, Sans’ brother, annoying regular at Muffet’s—that he never bothered to think of anything beyond it.

At least, before he saw his face plastered everywhere as soon he stepped out—masked, unrecognisable, yet undeniably him. Only then, with JJJ begrudgingly giving him praises, the public grateful for his sona, and a plethora of supers to annoy, did he realise that being the main character might actually be nice?
