about a month ago while liveblogging my no mercy run, i wrote:

kinda feel bad for sans. having the worst day of his whole life, of all his lives, and im just out here like “hope i can no hit the starting attack again! megalovania :) ” it’d be fun if we could spar him in pacifist. wouldn’t be as fun for him though.

it was really cool to actually see a toby-written pacifist sans fight! indeed, it wasn't as fun for him, lmao. he pretty clearly didn't want to be doing it, but he still played along and entertained frisk (and by extension, us), which was very nice of him, even if he refused to deal any damage

i can't get past his first attack yet, but i'll have to work at it over the course of the week

i'm likely to lose my post-it note keeping track of attempts before actually defeating sans, so. making a note here.

only 9 out of 23, and that's without bothering to heal yet, which will make the fight take even longer (since it doesn't progress without FIGHTing). long way to go

the attack i'm worst at dodging is the 3rd one (2nd after the opener), the one with alternating tall blue bones and short white bones. it's the only attack of the first 7 that i haven't no-hit even once, and i haven't even gotten close. at best i'm at half health afterwards. usually i'm draining to 1 hp and have very little leeway for the following attacks. thankfully the next few attacks are a lot easier

15 sans-induced deaths so far. my prediction is that he will take at least twice as many deaths as undyne to beat, so a minimum of 86, but i could see it taking well over 100.

did some research about the battle, and i think for now the game plan is to not use any items until the spare, saving them all for the second half. ideally, by the time i'm regularly reaching it, the early attack patterns will be so easy i won't have to worry about them and can concentrate on the rest. i can always decide to give myself a single healing turn in the middle of the first half if it turns out to be too hard.

i'm going to die a lot, but that's okay because it's more practice. thankfully the sans fight is a lot quicker to get into from the save point compared to undyne. (it would be nice if asgore would stop encouraging me, though.)

someone on reddit recommended getting a bunch of sea teas and drinking them during the spare to tackle the second half with increased speed. i feel like my higher hp healing items are a safer bet for now, but that's an interesting idea. might return to it once i can reach the spare consistently.

I have discovered a glitch that makes genocide grinding more bearable. i can get frisk to murder dance against a corner, then click outside the window, and now i have free use of my keyboard to do other things while they continue to dance and trigger enemy encounters. two pyropes just appeared while i was typing this post
