a rant? i’m not good with these but i just wanted to say something about an on going issue for artists! (mainly for undertale fans...) keep reading!
My friend, kanisaur, owns an art blog and posts Undertale fan arts as well as her own Undertale AU, Queentale. Ever since she started posting more of her art, she started seeing more and more people reposting them and some don’t even bother crediting her. This issue isn’t new and there might be hundreds of posts like this out there but I’ld like to talk about it again. (Disclaimer: I have never experienced having my art being stolen, so these are only my opinions and thoughts about this topic.)
I think this is a very important subject that people need to know, especially non artists (reposters cough). Art posted on the internet does not mean it’s free to repost and claim as yours. If you want to share the art because you like it, show the artist that you do by liking/reblogging/sharing the original post. If you want to post it in your profile/account or whatever, make sure to ask- always ask the artist first before doing so and credit them. By doing so, you’re giving respect to the creator.
“But I’m giving the artist exposure by sharing their work in my fan account with a lot of followers.” No. Stop. To me (especially when I was younger), when someone posts an artwork without credits, it automatically meant that you, the reposter, owns that art. There are people that blindly likes/shares a post without knowing if it’s a repost or not. How can the artist know how many people saw and liked their art when the responses are in a different account?
In Kani’s case, when people repost her art (with and without credit) there’ll be nasty comments (probably by children who doesn’t like the subjects of her art but, like, why would you comment something hurtful when you don’t like it? I don’t get why people have to really comment mean things when they can ignore it if they don’t like it). And it’s really disheartening.
She’s been through so much because of these disrespectful people and I’m glad she has friends and followers that support her and her art. And I know I have a small account but if you’re reading this, help an artist out.
If you’ve seen posts not by Kanisaur, please report it and/or send the repost’s link to me or Kani so that we/she can take it down. She has stated in her blog multiple times that she does not allow reposting and especially stealing her art in any social media. She has worked hard to make these pieces. She doesn’t deserve this. No artist does.
I may not be as helpful and I probably sound stupid right now but please, please help artists out. We just want to share our works. We don’t want people to steal them. Let’s have a friendly community, okay?
