Nell’ottavo episodio andiamo alla scoperta del più antico strumento sonoro conosciuto dall’uomo: la voce. La voce nasce dal corpo ma si proietta fuori da esso: è linguaggio, comunicazione, suono, musica. La voce è una costante della storia umana, veicolo delle tradizioni orali ben prima della scrittura, strumento di connessione tra gli individui. Ed oggi? In questa puntata scopriremo musiciste e musicisti che hanno fatto della voce e delle sue infinite possibilità espressive il centro focale della loro ricerca.

> MAREWREW - Ukouk. Round Singing Voices of the Ainu 2012-2024
Marewrew (pronunciato: Ma-leoo-leoo) è un gruppo vocale femminile che esplora il repertorio delle canzoni tradizionali Ainu. Gli Ainu, un gruppo a lungo represso del nord del Giappone, hanno una storia di emarginazione ma la musica di Marewrew non parla solo di sopravvivenza ma di resilienza e trasformazione. "Ukouk" significa "canto in cerchio", e si riferisce alla forma in cui Marewrew si esibiscono e registrano.
> ANSIS BĒTIŅŠ & ARTŪRS ČUKURS – Slavic Folk Songs
Una raccolta di canti sacri e non, provenienti da diverse regioni slave, basati sulla tradizione orale, con particolare attenzione ai canti ucraini. Quando la Russia invase l’Ucraina, molti ricercatori cominciarono a digitalizzare ed archiviare le registrazioni di canzoni popolari delle regioni colpite dalla guerra, per salvare dalla distruzione la loro ricca cultura immateriale. Ansis e Arturs hanno raccolto e trascritto le melodie e le hanno arrangiate per due voci.
> ASA HORVITZ, CARMEN QUILL, ARIADNE RANDALL, WAYNE HORVITZ - GHOST
Asa Horvitz cerca un linguaggio musicale per evocare le nostre esperienze di lutto. Guarda al passato per trovarlo, compilando un dataset di oltre 150 testi preesistenti che trattano della perdita, e al futuro tramite l’utilizzo degli strumenti: i testi sono dati in pasto ad un’intelligenza artificiale programmata ad hoc che li ricompone in un nuovo testo originale. Horvitz e il suo ensemble hanno costruito attorno a questo materiale testuale criptico, singolare ed emotivamente indifeso il loro album GHOST.
> RUTH GOLLER – Skilla
Skylla è il lavoro solista di debutto della compositrice, bassista e cantante di origine italiana e residente a Londra Ruth Goller. Un album che ruota attorno alle armoniche del suo basso, stonate ultraterrene, e densissimi arrangiamenti vocali.
> SENYAWA – Vajranala
Vajranala vede il duo sperimentale indonesiano formato dal cantante Rully Shabara e dal polistrumentista Wukir Suryadi esplorare come, nel corso dei secoli, il mondo naturale ha plasmato la nostra società, i sistemi di conoscenza da cui deriva il potere e perché questo risuona ancora oggi. Le tecniche vocali estese di Shabara incontrano gli strumenti autocostruiti di Suryadi.
> TIKORO ENSEMBLE – Hell Chamber
Ensemble Tikoro (Ensemble Gola in sundanese) sono un coro fondato a Bandung (Giava, Indonesia) dal compositore e insegnante di teoria musicale Robi Rusdiana e composto da cantanti metal estremi appartenenti a celebri band dell'underground locale. Voci gutturali, growl profondi, scream e squeal (tecniche vocali estese estreme tipiche del metal) vengono convertiti in notazioni musicali precise su spartito da Robi, consentendo loro di essere eseguiti come composizioni di musica classica.
> NINA BAIETTA – Ea: one-voice study on a wordless dictionary
Nina Baietta è una ricercatrice vocale. La sua pratica artistica, fondata sulla musica improvvisata e contemporanea, consiste in una personale decostruzione e riassemblaggio di un vocabolario sonoro e di segni emotivi. 𝘌𝘢: 𝘖𝘯𝘦-𝘷𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘺 𝘰𝘯 𝘢 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘺 è composto da otto composizioni basate su un sistema di segni che mira a entrare in quello spazio tra codice musicale e linguaggio verbale umano.

La poetessa, attivista e artista dei nuovi media Antye Greie-Ripatti, alias AGF, utilizza il linguaggio, il suono, la politica ed esplora le profondità udibili degli assemblaggi antiritmici post-internet. Il disco è incentrato sul corpo umano, sulla voce, sul testo poetico, su ciò che è libero, sulle mani come tecnologia, non sincronizzate, alla ricerca di tono e linguaggio, nel lavoro sul campo e nell'intimità di sé.

In the eighth episode we discover the oldest instrument known to mankind: the human voice. The voice arises from the body but projects outside of it: it is language, communication, sound, music. The voice is a constant in human history, a vehicle of oral traditions well before writing, an instrument of connection between individuals. And what about today? In this episode we will discover musicians who explore the voice and its infinite expressive possibilities.

Marewrew (pronounced: Ma-leoo-leoo) is a female vocal group that sings traditional Ainu songs. The Ainus, a long-suppressed group from northern Japan, have an history of marginalization, but Marewrew’s music speaks not just of survival but of resilience and transformation. 'Ukouk' means 'round singing', which refers to the form in which Marewrew perform and record.
> ANSIS BĒTIŅŠ & ARTŪRS ČUKURS – Slavic Folk Songs
A collection of songs and sacred chants from diverse Slavic regions, based on oral traditions, with a special emphasis on Ukrainian songs. When Russia invaded Ukraine, many people digitalized sound recordings of folk songs from the regions affected by war in order to save their rich immaterial culture from destruction. Ansis and Arturs collected and transcribed the melodies and arranged them for two voices.

Asa Horvitz wanted a musical language to evoke our experiences with loss. He looked to the past for answers, assembling a dataset of over 150 pre-existing texts that deal with grief, and towards the future for the tools, feeding them through a custom AI system. The piece that Horvitz and his ensemble built with the help of this material was cryptic, singular, and emotionally unguarded: a stunning music-theater piece called GHOST.
> RUTH GOLLER – Skilla
Skylla is the debut solo recording of Italian-born and London-based composer, bassist, and vocalist Ruth Goller. An album of otherworldly detuned bass harmonics and dense vocal arrangements.
> SENYAWA – Vajranala
Vajranala sees the Indonesian experimental duo of vocalist Rully Shabara and multi-instrumentalist Wukir Suryadi explore how, over centuries, the natural world has shaped our society, the knowledge systems from which power derives, and why that still resonates today.
> TIKORO ENSEMBLE – Hell Chamber
Ensemble Tikoro (Ensemble Throat in Sundanese) are a choir founded in Bandung (Java, Indonesia) by composer and teacher of music theory Robi Rusdiana and composed of extreme metal vocalists belonging to famous outfits of the local underground. Guttural vocals, deep growls, screams, and squeals are converted into precise notation by Robi, allowing them to be performed like classical music compositions.

Nina Baietta is a vocal researcher. Her artistic practice, grounded in improvised and contemporary music, consists of a personal deconstruction and reassembly of a vocabulary of sound and of emtional signs. 𝘌𝘢: 𝘖𝘯𝘦-𝘷𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘺 𝘰𝘯 𝘢 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘺 consists of eight compositions based on a system of signs that aims to enter that space between musical code and human verbal language.

Poetess, activist and new media artist Antye Greie-Ripatti, alias AGF, utilises language, sound, politics and explores speech within the audible depths of anti-rhythmic post-internet assemblages. The record centres around the human body, voice, text, bass, field, what is free, hands as technology, non-synchronised, finding tone and language, within field work and intimacy of self.
