I was purple from my hip bone to my knee and it only stopped there because my leg was so swollen the blood had no where to pool south of my kneecap. On my way home I stopped at the pharmacy to ask for some recommendations of what to do to reduce the swelling. When I lifted the hem of my maxi dress (there was no way pants were going on my leg), the pharmacist winced, shook her head, and then stared at me for a second before quietly asking “How did that happen?” The only thing I could say was the truth, I had been in a fight the night before, in Iowa. It was the Iowa part that made her double take and then say loudly, “You FLEW with your leg like that!?” Indeed, I had. I was lucky not to have a blood clot cause an aneurysm. And yet somehow that hadn’t even crossed my mind.
