My thoughts on Unexpected Falling, so far, in no particular order.
- I’m actually glad that I watched the Confidence before this because I know how the director/screenwriter paces. Which is start off drama slow with stuff that you don’t think is important, accelerate, accelerate, until every minute detail shows up in the last 5 episodes. It’s actually very different from most cdramas (and probably one of the biggest roadblocks to me finishing them), which is a lot of plot in the first 20 episodes to attract viewership, stall for like 10-15 episodes, and then finale.
- But NGL, what mostly kept me focused in the first 5 episodes was the fact that Peng Guanying looked really great in a 3 piece suit.
- Also, and I know the side plot involving You Gang means something but I really don’t care much for it. I was so glad when his wife called him out on it.
- Also, NGL, I lol at the reviewers who dropped before episode 10 complaining that the Gao Jun character is just a big cliche.
- I like that the plot doesn’t try to sugarcoat how sheltered Ruan Zhen Zhen has been during her marriage and how negatively it impacted her when her husband died. Her trying to find a job wasn’t some cutesy montage; it is hard getting back into the workforce with a long resume gap.
- I think I mentioned this before, but I do like that this is a drama about grown adults being grown adults. The plot treats the characters as adults. The plot treats the viewers as adults.
- The romance is interesting and a true slow burn. I do feel like the romance ended up far more secondary than the trailer (probably because it was trying to market off the second collaboration) but it feels fairly organic to the plot. But that said, director, just a little fanservice won’t hurt the plot.
- I remain disappointed that out of the slot of upcoming peng guanying projects, morally conflicted general having to enter into an arranged marriage with a princess in fake Tang dynasty isn’t one of them.
