The amount of white fans I’ve seen applauding Cody’s character growth while holding immense disdain for Ricky’s wariness is utter bull. Similarly, noting Murph’s RP decision wherein Cody realizes katanas aren’t just anime swords and ignoring Zac’s actual commentary about it. (I do love Cody cause he’s a wild character, but god does he provoke a sense of aggro in me cause I’m Asian American and have had to deal with SO many weebs like him.)

Exactly! It was something I saw a lot in the live discord tonight that made me enraged. I imagine it’s rough to see people venerating a fictional character who behaves like people who have caused you grief irl. It truly is a facet of fandom that is blind to and unaware/uncritical of the racial implications of their opinions. The way in which fans have unbalanced reactions to the characters (giving Cody more leeway to make mistakes and Ricky less leeway) is indicative of that bias. They baby Cody so much in their reactions and it kills me. He’s twenty fucking seven.

It especially burns in me because murph designed Cody to be insufferable and hated; To be laughed at, For the comedy of the show. Murph has the agency in Cody’s actions, if he beefs it you blame him not the other fictional characters who literally do nothing but send him help actions and consistently heal him and protect him (I think each turn Zac did something to help Cody this fight). Obviously their relationship is antagonistic, but Murph in show has repeatedly told the other PCs to be mean to Cody. And Ricky’s “mean” is really “lightly perturbed”. Ricky’s mean is “gosh this dudes annoying, but I’m still going to help”. He said “maybe we shouldn’t encourage his overblown ego” and people got angry? As if that’s not literally the character arc he’s on.

Truly, everyone in the party is being generous with how they treat Cody. Ricky is holding off because he has been disrespected by Cody multiple times (intentionally or not, consciously or not). And that’s fine. Don’t tell me you dislike Ricky less because he said one slightly less than kind thing when Cody’s done so much to deserve more ire.

Wanted to pop in a second and just point out a few name errors. Makes sense if you haven't actually seen the name spelled out yet, but rather than "Hooshi," it's "Hushi" (confirmed via tbhalfings social media)! No biggie here.

This one is more of a problem: it's not Rehka but Rekha. I'll admit that I've made this mistake myself. I've just noticed that even if her name is properly spelled in a screenshot, tweet, etc. it's still misspelled in yours tags, image ID, or caption. I understand it might be autocorrect filling it in, but it's hard to overlook when her name is often right there. I'm not here to lecture about the treatment and lack of recognition/respect that non-white names receive—I'm sure you're already aware of this. I think it'd be worth the time to use the search feature and fix the misspellings.

Personally doesn't matter to me if you answer this privately or publicly. I also don't want to do the ol' person of color song and dance wherein I overemphasize that I'm not aggro at you. Just wanted to be clear about it.

No, Jay, you absolutely do not have to justify/clarify your intentions! thank you so much for hitting me up! I’m very grateful to you for pointing it all out - my name irl gets misspelled/missaid often so I understand that seeing it is really frustrating, and especially harmful in the context that I’m misspelling the names of people/characters of color. and I’m genuinely sorry for messing these up especially because as you said Rekha’s name is often right there. I’ll be more diligent I promise.

I genuinely thought I had checked the spelling on both - my brain failed me on Hushi’s spelling for sure (I could’ve sworn it was spelled Hooshi on TBHalflings Insta but that’s on me being overconfident) and i have no excuse for Rekha. I know i can’t edit and change every reblog someone has done, but I’m gonna go in and edit all my tags and posts so if anyone does reblog the original, it’ll be proper. And I’ll be triple checking going forward. To reiterate, thank you and don’t hesitate going forward if I mess up again! I’d rather be corrected than disrespect people or characters!

Okay, I’m slowly getting through Outlaws & Obelisks, and like… Panya’s introductory scene… Catch me, I’m swooning.

Every scene with Panya at the center has me swooning or rolling with laughter. Unati has talents that are unparalleled and they’re utterly stunning as an artist. I’ve cried, hurt my stomach laughing, and shivered with the emotion they put out, in everything but especially as Panya. Let me know when you get to Panya’s interactions with her patron/in the library because those moments are So Much.

Absolutely feel free to answer this privately or not at all because of location-sensitivity, but did you watch Fun Home at the Huntington Theatre in Boston? I saw it back on opening night and wow was I caught off-guard. I knew it was good/award-winning and walked in fairly blind, but I was so unsure of how a musical could be made of the story. Anyway, it wrecked me!!!!

lmao yeah that cat's been out of the bag for ages i think i've been pretty open about being from the boston area so YES it was the huntington's production 🥹 so so glad you also got to see it because my god it was UNBELIEVABLE. i went in the same way, i'd vaguely known about the musical being very acclaimed and obviously knew about alison and fun home due to. you know, lesbianism. but went in without listening to the cast recording or watching any clips or anything and it fucking DESTROYED me the first time. truly was not expecting it and it just knocked me flat on my back from the very first number

last night was actually my second round and this time i got to go with my friend charlotte and god it was so so fucking good we literally had to stand outside on the street and debrief/traumadump for like 2 hours after asdlfkjasdlkjf AND also the understudy for alison was on last night so it was very cool for me to have gotten to see both actors perform it and really interesting to see some of the differences in the choices each of the actors made!

also very cool for me to be able to have a full performance where i was able to devote a big chunk of my attention to watching helen bechdel's reactions when she was just in the background of scenes because holy shit ACTING™ it was so so heartbreaking and the actor does SUCH a good job of like. barely holding it together and clinging to her life and family and self by the skin of her teeth and letting little glimpses of just abject grief and loss and horror slip through before the mask slides back on. AUGH. i love womennnn. (also very very cool to find out the understudy who was on for alison last night covers both alison and helen! INSANE to me to be able to cover both those characters my god. boggles the mind.)

Oh. Oh, I teared up. Allura but with a legacy she gets to experience for herself and watch the garden grow. I love the planet of Not-Altea, esp when it so better applies to “old giving way to the new.” I also now have Thor: Ragnarok feelings (“Altea is not a place, it’s a people”). Anyway, I’m gonna go reread BPR. Thank you for the time, care, and effort you’ve invested in fleshing out these characters.
