Jane Crocker is dangerously close to potentially embarrassing herself.

That, or scoring herself a cutie.

His name is Dirk Strider and he comes to the bakery she works at multiple times a week. Monday, Thursday, and Friday to be exact. He always gets cinnamon rolls and a coffee for breakfast. He’s tall, with white-blond hair meticulously styled upwards, and he always wears these triangle anime shades. They look kind of ridiculous, but Jane secretly thinks it’s kind of cute.

He always talks to Jane when he comes in, because she’s really the only one who works there besides her dad, who’s in the back baking all the time. He’s pretty interesting, this Dirk fellow. He says he’s a mechanic, and he likes to build robots too. How cool is that? He says he always comes to the bakery because their cinnamon rolls are the best in town. Jane has since told her father that she would like to help out more in the kitchen, and she would be glad to take over for some of the things, like the cinnamon rolls perhaps. For no particular reason.

She’ll steal glances at him here and there while he eats. Goodness, he is quite the looker. She keeps meaning to ask if he likes detective movies or novels. She still hasn’t. And how does he feel about pranks? Is he the type that plays along or always gets upset? Well, everyone has their limits. Really, what does he like besides robots and probably anime? Jane wanted to talk to him more than the occasional counter exchange.

So today she fidgeted behind the counter having the debate of the century in her head: should she give him her BettyBother handle? She already had it written down. She knew he had a Pesterchum, too, because she heard the notification on his phone. All she had to do was slide the slip of paper in with his change, since he always pays in cash. But would that be weird? She talked to him a little a few times a we- OH MY GOD THE DOOR. Wait, no, it’s someone else. Shucks, she was on edge. She helped the customer but was pretty much out of it while doing so. She probably messed up the change. Whatever, she had more important things to worry about. If she were a gumshoe, that customer would have been trivial knowledge like, the victim is distantly related to Teddy Roosevelt. There are more important clues at hand! Like, for example, t- oh shit there he is.

“Morning, Jane!” Dirk says as walks in.

“Oh, good morning Mr. Strider,” Jane says nervously. It’s now or never, Crocker. You’re an heiress to this place, you’ve got this. “You want the usual today?”

“You know me so well.” He walks up to the counter and hands her a ten.

“So, any new creations lately?” Jane asks, trying to not lose her mind as she rings him up in the register. The slip of paper is in her other hand.

“I’m still working on the rabbit,” he replies casually. “It’s coming along pretty well.” He pauses. “You wouldn't happen to have a Pesterchum, would you?”

Jane freezes. She nearly drops the change, which didn’t contain the slip of paper, since in the end she had decided not to give it to him.

“Um, I have a BettyBother, but it’s the same thing, really.”

“Great. Do you mind if I get your handle?”

“Yes! Okay! I’ll right it on the receipt, right here I mean. ”

Jane hastily scribbles down her handle, feeling really light-headed at this point.

“Here!” She thrusts his receipt and the change at him. “Your change is 4 dollars and 13 cents.”

“Thanks,” he says with a smile.

“Right. I’m going to get your order now.”

“Okay.”
