It always depends on the character and what I'm trying to get out of them. For Sansa it was important to go through all her chapters and just understand her journey and her important points, what brings about her changes in character and the exact differences in her. It was actually very interesting cause it does give you a sense of how isolated she is in King's Landing and how limited is the circle of people around her and how no one allows her any knowledge of the political events all around her. And it also made me see certain minor characters differently.
But I would not go about rewatching the show. Because that is not the Sansa I want to write as and it would've sidetracked me and subconsciously allowed for certain deviations that the show allows. It might be interesting when the show comes back and trying to keep away from the Sansa D&D are writing… Because I'm having a similar experience with my TVD/TO Elijah where TO is entirely NOT what I want to write him as and there was a time where it really screwed me up and I had to let go simply because of too much outside noise. =/
Playlists also help tho. I have an iTunes playlist for most the characters I've written and it's easy to go there and put it in shuffle and the inspiration usually comes round.
