Super late with the ask, sorry, but I was wondering if you could offer me any advice on my recent mental health diagnosis. I'm really struggling with the feeling that I'm faking it. I don't know why, but it's not very fun. I've also been forgetting to take my prescription??? Which is not great? I already use a pill case, which helps, but I don't really want to have to write a note or set a reminder. I don;t want that constant reminder that I'm on meds. Love your blog - you're lovely. Thank you!!
According the diagnosis, then I can confidently reassure you that you cannot fake a mental illness by accident. Faking something takes intent and it takes consistent effort and if you were faking this, then you’d be fully aware of it. It’s far more likely that it’s the unfortunately still very widespread societal idea that mental illness isn’t real and that struggling due to mental illness isn’t valid which is making you second guess and question yourself. I mean it’s hard not to internalize such societal attitudes in some capacity! But I absolutely 100% promise you that if you were faking this then you’d know for sure.
According the medication, then I think you have to try to actively confront and work through your prejudices - cause while it isn’t fun to have to rely on pills to function, it also isn’t wrong or weak or otherwise bad. So I recommend that you try to push through the idea that taking meds is wrong and bad and that you set up that goddamn phone reminder even though you’d rather not. Don’t just accept the idea that taking meds is somehow bad. Confront it. Challenge it. Work through it. Cause being mentally ill is shitty enough WITHOUT you beating yourself up about it!
