Headcanon: About Selkies
Folklore of the Selkie comes from the Shetland and Orkney Islands of Scotland. A Selkie can only come ashore once every 7 years unless someone takes their skins. Often Selkie women have been taken as brides by mortal men when the men steal and either destroy or hide their skins. Selkie women prove to be dutiful mothers and wonderful wives, but will always long for their sea home. If they get their skin back, they will return to the ocean. Selkie men tend to be more aggressive, and less romantic. They cause tempests, and storms to avenge the death of seals that are killed by hunters. They also occasionally come to the land to mate with human women, and are also quite attractive as their female counterparts. Sometimes, when a Selkie woman is taken as a wife, the Selkie husband will come looking for her. The mortal man will have to fight to keep his Selkie bride, or the Selkie man will find the skin, and take his bride back to the ocean. If a Selkie chooses to stay on land, they will bury their skin, but such cases are so few and far between that there is little point in mentioning it. One can tell a Selkie on land because they have a light webbing between their fingers and toes, and large soulful eyes in some color of the sea(Commonly gray, but may be blue, green or black). If trapped on land, they are creatures of sorrow, forever gazing at the sea. The soul of a Selkie carries heavy emotions, but they will not cry, for they only have 7 tears to be shed in their lifetime, which they usually only shed tears to call their own kind to them on the shores of the sea.
The Selkie people in their own natural form are immortal, and do not die of natural causes, though they have been known to be killed by seal hunters. They also tend to age much more slowly, aging normally until they reach maturity, and then it takes a long time for them to look old. However, if their skins have been taken from them, Selkies can die of natural causes and old age, if not shock if their seal skins are destroyed.
The children of a mating between a Selkie and a Human are marvelous beings, often having great wisdom, and creative skills that some may call genius. Oftentimes, these skills are in the realms of music. They have a similar calling to the sea as their supernatural parent does, and will occasionally be taken back by the Selkie parent to be raised in the sea, to learn the ways of the Selkie people before the child is returned to shore.
