The Story So Far
(catching up the uninitiated to @unhingedselfships‘ kadokuraverse)
As the wife of the Tojo Clan’s sixth Chairman, Kimi finds herself at parties where she encounters the Hokkaido arms dealer Kadokura Kenshi. Initially drawn to him as one of the few fluent English speakers at these events, Kimi and Kadokura eventually become good friends, in no small part due to the fact that they are perhaps equally, though in different ways, odd. And also due to Kimi’s fascinating willingness to overlook Kadokura’s... hobbies.
Much to Kadokura’s bemusement, he finds himself drawn into the Dojima family (lowercase-f) as a close friend and a godfather/uncle figure to Kimi and Daigo’s children.
The fact that Kadokura suddenly has people who actually care about him annoys Kadokura’s (only) other “friend,” Andre Richardson. Richardson, a very pleasant person, likes spending time with Kadokura mostly as a power trip; he can be rather unpleasant to Kadokura. Dismissive, pushy, insulting. Although Kadokura is a powerful and influential man, Kadokura doesn’t really react. Not that he’d admit it, and not that he even knows, but Kadokura is desperately lonely, and, hence, is willing to put up with a lot from Richardson.
But with Kimi in the mix, Kadokura suddenly has a much healthier (healthier for him, not for Kimi) source of social interaction. And to make matters worse, Kimi dares to be critical of how Richardson treats Kadokura. Richardson, like a child who never much cared about a toy but wants it now that someone else is interested in playing, takes all this as a challenge.
To ‘win Kadokura back,’ Richardson invites Kadokura to spend time at his ranch in North Dakota. During a stay of a few weeks Richardson, not a man of subtlety, encourages all of Kadoura’s worst habits. And Kadokura, not a man of subtlety, indulges them. It’s sort of like a kid who’s allowed to eat candy for dinner, but with more substances and murder.
Meanwhile Kimi may not be an arms dealer, or an internationally wanted terrorist, or five feet tall. But she doesn’t share well. And she isn’t going to sit around in Tokyo while Kadokura lives it up—or down—in the United States.
She has to at least make sure he’s taking care of himself. So she heads to North Dakota to make a surprise visit.
It turns out that Kadokura gets a bit weird when he’s having that much fun.
It turns out that Kimi likes weird.
Plus, she can’t just let her Kenshi-Tenshi neglect himself by not eating healthy meals and getting enough sleep!
