On the August 25, the lines were already long before the lunchtime event to promote the UNEP/FAO ThinkEatSave campaign had started. It seemed that the citizens of Sydney already knew what treats were in store for them as some 5,000 of them eyed the gastronomic creations of some of the best chefs in the city cooked from surplus and waste food gathered by the Australian partner in the campaign, OzHarvest.
The lunchtime public feeding in Martin Place in the Centre of Sydney’s CBD was part of a nationwide campaign to raise individual awareness of food waste and to educate on how everyone can contribute to stopping it. Almost one third of food is wasted in Australia, totalling over 8 billion dollars, noted OZHarvest CEO Ronni Khan in opening the event. Her call to act was echoed by the Lord Mayor of Sydney, the Honourable Clover Moore, who also spoke of Sydney’s broader commitment to sustainability, a theme that was also taken up by the New South Wales Minister for the Environment, Mark Speakman. That food waste was a global problem that everyone should be concerned about and act on was the key point made by UNIC Director, Christopher Woodthorpe, who also pointed out that such action was key to transforming our world and to meeting the Sustainable Development Goals.
As the thousands of Sydneysiders enjoyed the culinary delights ranging from beef and lemongrass meatballs, to pork hotdogs with bacon jam, veggie curries, sumptuous soups, bread and butter puddings and even berry meringue trifles made from cake cut-offs, they also listened in on panel discussions where passionate sustainability experts debated issues around food waste, food security and food sustainability.

The UN Honours our Heroes on Peacekeeping Day
“Being a peacekeeper has always been about devoting a period of time of one's life to the noble ideals of peace and security. But it has taken a very specific dimension in recent years in view of the very dangerous situations in which we've been asked to step in,” Hervé Ladsous, Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, told the UN News Centre ahead of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, marked annually on 29 May. This year's theme is “Honouring our Heroes,” a nod to the 125,000 military, police and civilian staff who serve in 16 peacekeeping operations around the world. The deployment is the largest in UN history. Read More: http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp...
