Someone asked me today why we grow Devil's Claw (Proboscidea lousianica) if the seeds are so difficult to extract and taste so similar to sunflower seeds (which are much easier to grow and harvest), and if the young green pods are similar to the more prolific and tender okra fruit, and if I don't plan to use the claws to make the black threads traditionally used in Tohono O'odham basket weaving. Also, it is questionable whether the time and minor hand injuries it takes to extract the seeds make it worth it to grow these for seed sales. A big part of the work of the Roughwood Seed Collection is to satisfy our desire to know and preserve culturally important plants, and to share these seeds and their stories as widely as possible so we can keep them in our collective commons and consciousness.
