Tagged by @unicornsandbutane. I have, yes, you’ve guessed it, the five dollar-est wine, so, 10 songs I’m currently obsessed with.
I’m always kind of mehhh about doing music memes, because my music tastes are sort of outdated and I tend to do this thing where I listen to one artist or even one song over and over for weeks at a time and then listen to nothing for weeks at a time, except for my standard busy-work playlists, which are mostly instrumental.
I do have YouTube playlists for accounting-heavy days at work, when I’m staring at spreadsheets and billing statements all day, and do I have a couple of YouTube workout mixes, but I don’t have iTunes or a Spotify account or anything like that, so we’re gonna go with YouTube here, too.
FYI, my most-used “I’m doing lots of billing reconciliation” playlist is titled Beethoven’s I Want To Break Free, because I’m hilarious like that.
I also have to note that @unicornsandbutane mentioned 4 songs that I would have included, and I really don’t want to repeat. House of the Rising Sun by the Animals is just. Such a fucking song, you are absolutely right.
Gimme!Gimme!Gimme!(A Man After Midnight) by ABBA is gonna start us off, because, first of all, it’s fuckin’ ABBA, and this song makes me feel aggressively bisexual ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It was one of the songs people put the Kylo and Rey vs Praetorian Guards throne room scene to, and it’s on the dean’s playlist in one of my favorite Community episodes, and, anyway, it’s fuckin’ ABBA.
The Crawl by Placebo, because I’ve been doing a lot of thinking and reminiscing lately, which I really ought to stop, but in the meantime, have it anyway.
Conquest of Spaces by Woodkid. IDK, Woodkid kind of hits the same parts of my brain that Muse does/did, and to some degree Florence and the Machine. I really do enjoy grand electro-operatic fantasy in modern song form.
Kiss Off by Violent Femmes. This is one of my headcanon Kylo songs (does anyone else have these ridiculously extensive character playlists, or is it just me?).
The Fire by Bishop Briggs. I love her voice. This is my current “listen to obsessively for weeks” ever since @kyloream introduced me to it.
Suzanne by Leonard Cohen. I love it a lot, though it’s not my most favorite of his.
I See A Darkness covered by Johnny Cash (original by Bonnie Prince Billy), because it’s relatable as fuck. Seriously, mood, or it me, or whatever.
I’ve been listening to a ton of Pink Floyd lately, see “thinking and reminiscing” above. I always sort of forget that On The Turning Away is a Floyd song, and it’s a pleasant surprise/remembering every time I hear it.
Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down), linking to the Nancy Sinatra version here, though there are so, so many other good covers.
Y’all, I’m sorry, but we’re gonna go for actual opera to finish this out, because I’ve been listening to bass-baritones a lot, and because come on, opera demons can get it.
Linking to four versions of Son lo Spirito Che nega from Arrigo Boito’s Mefistofele, though imho Bryn Terfel is not at his best here, though I love him in Die Walkure. As a Russian, I feel like I do appreciate Chaliapin a lot, and he fucking laugh-sings some lines, which is just badass, but the recording is from the 1920s. Ildar Abdrazakov definitely, definitely makes me feel aggressively bisexual, and I cannot decide if I like him or Samuel Ramey best. Here’s the Samuel Ramey take.
Tagging, uh, let’s see, if you want to do it, please do it, but no pressure! @kuresoto, @boredbyreality, @reserve, @beeeeebeeee, @gentleman-caller, @heyktula, @saltandrockets, @helliskylux , @agent-nemesis, @mazarinedrake, and I’m gonna tag @kyloream because I selfishly want more music recs but please don’t feel compelled!
