Trinity House hat, c. 1955
Hat with white cotton cover, Trinity House badge, and gold laurel wreath on peak. Belonged to Henry Austin Fraser.
Trinity House pilots were skilled mariners and provided a vital service to ships bound for British ports. The pilotage service usually operated from pilot cutters when transfering to and from vessels. A Trinity House pilot's licence was renewed annually at which time his eyesight, general health and knowledge of local waters were tested.
