Wolf bristles a bit at Bart’s pressing. He doesn’t
have the patience to deal with this right now. He
isn’t exactly the sharing type.
Unfortunately, he knows that Bart will only wear him
down until he eventually gets what he wants. In this
case, that means Wolf either has to spill it, or endure
the full power of Bart’s stubbornness.
” What do you want, Bart? You want me to tell you that
I don’t want you out there? Because I don’t. You want
the truth? You don’t belong out there; you’re too naive
and you’re gonna get yourself killed trying to chase the
Flash all over Central City! “
He knows he should stop there, but he can’t. Bart
wants the truth, so Wolf is going to give it to him,
and they’ll both have to deal with the consequences.
” This isn’t some game—there are no extra lives! You die
and that’s it. The rest of the world moves on, and not a
single person will ever give a damn about the punk kid
that got himself killed trying to be a hero. ”
—Except him, but that’s more truth than he’s
willing to share right now.
Bart flinches when Wolf starts yelling. And then
the words cut deep, and Bart slowly begins to feel
raw, like exposed flesh left out for the air. He doesn’t
understand--doesn’t want to, no matter how much
he should, and Bart inhales sharply.
He doesn’t explode back. Doesn’t yell. He gets this thin-lipped
smile on his face, and Bart’s entire body stiffens, and his fists
lock and clench up--entire body tightened like a coil, ready to spring.
“ If that’s how you feel about it. “
He can’t disguise the hurt in his voice. Bart seemed
to pull himself inward--out of shame, a desire to not
disturb the area around him, because clearly his existence
has, and then Bart slowly begins backing up, eyes darting
from one place to another.
“ Then I’m going to get going. Thanks for taking care of naive me. “
