It's Labour Day
And I wanna take a minute to think about our comrade ancestors and elders
Every labour law and right was paid for in blood
Either because workers banded together and unionized and demanded better working conditions, often putting themselves in danger doing so
Or workers died
The 40 hour work week was paid for in blood
Child labour laws were paid for in blood
Minimum wage was paid for in blood
PPE requirements were paid for in blood
I get that unions aren't perfect, they have weak spots and downsides and some of them deal with corruption (looking at you, Unifor, ya fuckin raiders)
But they protect workers. They win rights for workers. They raise the floor for workers. They fight for safety and workers rights and equal pay for equal work
Thank you, ancestors and elders, who have paved the way for us. I will keep fighting for all workers, in your memory
