Tonight!~ A Better UNI

UNI is pretty freaking great, right? But even UNI has room for improvement, from the need for Gender-Inclusive housing to the lack of Kitten and Ice Cream Fridays, our school could use a few minor tweaks. (No but seriously, KITTENS *AND* ICE CREAM, c’mon board of regents ;3 ) 

That’s not to say UNI hasn’t come a long way. Tonight UNI Proud wants to reflect on all the progress we’ve made through the years while generating some ideas and ways we as a campus can improve. From 7 to 8 tonight we’ll have various discussions and outlets for our Proud family to conceptualize and brainstorm some realistic (Aaaannndd some .... less-then realistic) solutions to make out campus that much more progressive, inclusive and awesome.

Tonight! UNI Proud Welcomes RODCON

Video Games, we’ve all played one at one point or another. Be you a fan of story-driven RPG’s or an avid Dance Dance Revolution fanatic; a Neko Atsume-junkie or first person shooter aficionado. But what happens when being queer intersects with the largest growing form of entertainment in the modern world? What does it mean to identify has a Ga(y)mer? Tonight in partnership with RODCON UNI Proud will be screening the film Gaming in Color, which deals with online interactivity amongst LGBTQ gamers and screen-lovers. Join us from 7 - 9 in the Oak Room for this special collaboration with RODCON.

Books and Poems and Queer stuff! Oh my!

-- please excuse my poor attempt at an Oz reference --  Tonight UNI Proud is focusing on some examples of LGBTQ literature and written word. Please feel free to bring examples of some of your favorite authors or serializations to share with other members! For those of you who may not have much in the way of LGBTQ lit you can always visit the campus LGBT center (located in the upper level of Maucker Union) to find a plethora of queer academic journals, poetry, fiction and a few graphic novels! These are available for student use so please make full use of em! 

Don’t forget to submit pieces for Transgenda and UNI Proud’s progressive poetry slam! The event will take place on December 1st and submissions are due November 25th. (Please send submissions to the UNI Proud email - [email protected] - with the header ‘Poetry Submission’) Proud will be sure to read all submissions and include any trigger warnings prior to the performance.

We Now Return to our Regular Queer Programming

WE’RE BACK!!!!! 

Sorry everyone for not posting this summer, boy did it go by fast. BUT we’re back and better than ever. Starting next week on the 1st we will be meeting in our usual spot at our usual time for our first get together of the year. 

Maucker Union Presidential Room at 7 pm to 8 pm. 

Expect a large crowd and some fun get-to-know each other activities. There will also be plenty of time for input in what YOU want Proud to cover, discuss and explore this year. Pro tip: Don’t wear dress shoes like I did last year! They got scuffed to heck D: 

This year also expect more reblogs of queer and relevant info/pictures/comics/ramblings/kittens - mostly because I should and also really want to. For those of you who have left comments and questions over the summer, I promise I shall get to them as soon as I can and I appreciate your patience. 

I hope everyone has had an amazing first (and second) day at UNI and we look forward to what this year will bring in terms of new faces, fond memories and lots of queer realness. Much love. Very queer. Wow.

Game Night, Elections and Trans Day of Visibility!!!

Tonight at Proud we’re having a session of large group games along with elections for all of our executive positions! Currently two positions will be vacant come next year but all positions are up for re-election. If you have any questions on the responsibilities of each position feel free to contact Proud via e-mail ([email protected]) or send us a note here on tumblr and we’ll be happy to give you a run down of what each title entails.

And of course, Pride week is just 5 days away!!!! AAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!! We’re happy to announce the keynote speaker this year is none other than OneIowa’s Executive Director Donna Red Wing!!! She’ll be speaking about the history behind her extensive fight for LGBT issues on Wednesday, April 8th at 7pm in the Maucker Ballroom! The week also includes our Drag Show on Monday (4/6) Queer Monologues on Tuesday (4/7) a screening of David Weissman’s “We Were Here” on Thursday (4/9) and Progressive Prom on Friday (4/10)

Lastly but most certainly not least....-ly(?) A big shout out to Trans Day of Visibility and all of the fabulous people who give an identity to what is more often then not an overlooked issue within both our LGBT family and society as a whole. Stay beautiful and keep being the amazing brave people we all know you are! Don’t forget to support our amazing fellow Queer Student Org. Transgenda; we love you and are so Proud (haha, cheesy) of you folks <3

Annnnndddd We’re Back!

Whew! Welcome back from Spring Break everyone! I hope you all had a fun-filled period of relaxation and productivity! I personally focused way to much on the first part and got little-to-nothing accomplished! Oh well. 

Tonight at Proud we’re doing a post-break check-in, we’ll share what we did over break and catch up with one another. Share your high and/or low parts of break provided you’re comfortable doing so. 

Also a reminder for everyone that Pride week is less then 2 weeks away! Get Hype!!!! For those of you who wish to contribute more we’ll be holding officer elections for events next week on the 31st.

Trivia Time!!

Tonight at Proud we're having a friendly competition of Queer Trivia! Expect topics ranging from History and Music to Sports and Movies, a little something for everyone! 

Last call tonight for those of you who wish to preform at Pride Week's Queer Monologues - tonight is the deadline to sign up! Please e-mail [email protected] if you plan to preform so we can start organizing pieces and help with writing for those that need it.

Additionally, those of you who signed up to preform in the Drag Show need to have selected your music choices by tonight and sent them into Proud so we can schedule rehearsals.
