Task 3 - Scripts

Factual - Scripts that are factual like documentary films, TV are mainly what the filmmaker want to get across to the audience and achieve this with the script thats written before any the filming starts to take place. The isn't always followed when filming ands changes cane made as the script can't be too specific as the filming cane change based on what is written on the script and whether it goes with whats been written before and after a scene.

News Scripts must stick to certain rules as the News Presenter needs to be accurate when delivering the news to the viewers. The facts and figures need to be accurate when giving out the news. they only have a short amount of time to deliver the news so they need to miss irrelevant bits out to avoid going over the broadcast time.

Entertainment Scripts are done for things like panel shows and quizzes. the scripts are done by adding jokes to the script. The host of the show will then follow the script and use these jokes during shooting and this is as well as links to ad breaks and end of the shows.

Live Broadcasts don't always go off a script as the events are live and you can't predict what is going to happen and therefore have to adjust the script to happens, this can happen in sports events and you down know what score its going to end upend who's going to win the match until after the final whistle.

Fictional aim to a story that entertains the viewers and the script will be very detailed in order to make the viewers more interested in what is going on. the detailed script will include more camera movements so the actors know what they are doing to make sure the filming is to what the director wants and it must be derailed in order for people to watch the film and buy the DVD.

Agent representation

An agent is responsible for the role of assisting the client in regards to sales and overall workload. They somewhat represent the author, and have their best interest at heart - especially when it comes to income. The majority of the time, the agent will specialise in a specific genre; arguably so easier to communicate and negotiate the product. For example, if you’re writing a script based around a thriller narrative, it makes more sense to seek out an agent with sufficient knowledge around that genre. In a nutshell, the agent is looking to find a way of getting as much income as possible.

Royalty payments

Royalty payments are basically the money a writer will receive from the sales of books and scripts. For example, with each sale of a book, the writer will receive a percentage of the payment - in other words, royalty. The payment is usually split between the writer, agents and producers.

Professional presentation

As a writer, after eventually finishing your script, it’s vitally important that it’s presented in a professional way. When it comes to the process of being published, the publisher will opt for a script that follows the usual conventions. They like to know that the writer is capable of following the typical structure; usually not bothering if it’s scruffy and set out wrong. It mainly comes down to the way the writer wants to portray themselves and their dedication to the publication process. This could also be linked to personal presentation, for example, the attire they choose when attending meetings. Body language and posture can also make a massive difference in regards to if the writer will have their product published.

Commissioning roles

Commissioning editor - The commissioning editor has a key and vital role within the commission process itself. Their role is to indentify books and scripts to publish in order to build up a publishers list. They’ll usually be the initial link between the proposal of a book/script and the published work. In a nutshell, the commissioning editor is basically the one who dictates whether your work is published or not.

Executive producer - The executive producer basically makes sure the client has their requirements up to standard. Moreover, they’re responsible for the overall quality control of the production.

Producer - Producers are generally those who bring all of the initial ideas together. They also take personal involvement in regards to whether the script will be chosen or not.

Director - The director brings the script and via the use of visuals and sound. They are arguably responsible of all aspects of the creative process.

Editorial assistant - The editorial assistant provides support for all stages of publication. They need to have a great eye for detail, and be capable of planning and producing different publications.

Writer - The writer is responsible for the overall narrative and storyline of the script. It’s the writer who comes up with the initial idea and wishes to get it published and noticed.

Agent - In regards to script commissioning, the agent works alongside the writer. They usually specialise in a certain genre or type of authors. Agents usually establish and maintain professional relationships with certain writers and publishers.

What is Commissioning?

Commissioning is the process of selecting or employing a company or individual to produce a media product.

How can I get my script commissioned?

Key considerations:

- What type of product do I have?

Unit 24 – Explaining the process from paper to production

In today’s lesson we looked at going from writing an idea, research, creating the script to the commissioning process through to the production.

What is commissioning? - The process of selecting/employing a company or individual to producer or media production.

How can I get my script commissioned? Key considerations: - What type of product do I have? - Genre? - Style? - U.S.P? - Audience and potential demand for your idea?

Can I sell/pitch it directly to a corporation – who will they be?

Can I get support or representation to sell my idea?

Dialogue

Dialogue in a screenplay is a delicate art. Dialogue should advance your storyline – create meaning. Dialogue is about character: - can illuminate character faster than any amount of exposition - letting a viewer witness a conversation between characters

Dialogue should a can set the scene, advance the action, give insight into characterization and foreshadow events.
