Unit 78 C5 - Design Method
Create a Health and Safety breakdown of all materials techniques and processes. Use materials, techniques and processes with a good understanding of Heath and Safety.
Safety with design has to be thought about when designing the set. Here are some hazards below.
These include, but are not limited to:
■ unsafe structures resulting from poor design; ■ use of poor quality or unsuitable materials (sharp or
unfinished edges, protruding nails etc); ■ poor construction;
■ increased fire risk from the use of unsuitable materials;
■ hazardous substances;
■ manual handling difficulties caused by heavy and bulky scenery items etc;
■ trips and slips on uneven or unsuitable floor surfaces, uneven steps or stair treads;
■ inadequate edge protection and/or handrails on open edges;
■ failure to provide handrails;
■ falling objects (eg scenery or lamps inappropriately suspended or poorly rigged);
■ electrical shock or burns from unsafe electrical equipment, or inadequate earthing;
■ entrapment and entanglement in unguarded or unprotected mechanical devices;
■ visual and/or special effects;
■ use of glass on or in the set;
■ use of scaffold structures;
■ hazards associated with seating provision.
People in charge for the safety of a production set or scenery are the producers and the designers as well as the construction team.
The producer is responsible for ensuring the overall safety of any production and that a competent designer/s and construction team are appointed, with the specific health and safety responsibilities of each member clearly stated and understood. The designer/s and construction team should be provided with information on the nature of the production and any known risks.
